Medicine has always been my passion and I reckon your university is the best fit for my wish. First of all, this year I’ve been studying medicine in France but I decided to leave because I miss a more foreign environment that studying in China would offer me. Second of all, the death of my father due to cancer pushed me into pursuing this passion of mine and as one of my dad’s last wishes. Well firstly, I stumbled upon a HUST video online when looking up universities to apply to and it appealed to me. I am looking for a reputable university with great academic system, all inclusive environment with students from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. A university that gives students a choice to leave on or off campus and freedom to explore extra curricular activities in and outside the university grounds. HUST seems like the perfect fit. Secondly, I know a few people that are already students and they highly recommend it.

“Effort”, is the word that defines my life. "Do my best to be the best" has been motto of my life. I was a Shorttrack skater when I was young. I started this sport to train my body and mind, but soon after I started skating it became my life as I fell in love with the sport and dreamed of winning the gold medal. It was not easy for me to skate faster than others because at the time, I was smaller and shorter than them. But dreaming of winning the Olympic medal, I worked really hard. I thought if I try harder than the other players I could overcome my disadvantage of being small. I came to practice first and left the practice last. Due to my efforts, my performance improved greatly, becoming one of the best skaters in the city and I thought I had a great future ahead of me as an athlete. However, during one practice session I was severely injured and I had to give up on my dream. I was desperate and depressed. My father thought it would help me to start again if I moved to a new environment, so he took me along with him to United States when he was offered a job at the University of Washington as an exchange professor. In a new country with a new setting I was able to rebound from desperation and I came to realize that I had to make new plans since I couldn’t skate anymore. Therefore, I decided to study hard and become academically competent. I thought education would open up many options for me in the future. At first, it was very challenging due to language barrier and cultural differences, but I worked really hard to overcome the challenges I faced. I put great effort into studying and because of that I was able to do well in school. I actually enjoyed studying. To me studying was very similar to sports. It was fair. The more I try the better I become. After experiencing both the sports and academics, I came to realize that effort was the key to every kind of success. I came to believe that no matter where I am and what kind of obstacles I face, if I face it with effort there is nothing to be afraid of. Since then, I have had strong faith in effort and lived my life doing my very best every day, believing that effort will take me to where my dream is. My path to "Medicine" My pursuit of Medicine started from yearning for a "White Coat". I thought the white coat that physicians were wearing looked very cool. The symbolic meaning of the white coat was very compatible to medicine. The purity and loftiness of the white coat were what define medicine. That is how I started to pursue field of medicine, to wear the white coat. But as I start to experience various kinds of volunteer services and research that are related medicine, my journey became more serious and concrete. In order find out what medicine is and to be well prepared for a medical career, I engaged in many kinds of activities that were related to medicine. When I was freshman in college, I worked as a physical therapist in a rehabilitation program. The program was designed for patients who were injured and who had a hard time walking and moving, with the program designed to help them recover from their physical disability, so they can walk and move by themselves without the help of someone else and wheelchair. I worked closely with many patients and through interaction and conversation with the patients I learned an important lesson. Namely, that some of the patients who were seriously injured due to illness and accidents told me that they thought about giving up their lives. They told me that it was not easy for them to overcome the disabilities. But instead of giving up, they decided to overcome their obstacle. As I heard their hardships, I came to realize and understand their pain and desperation that they had to go through. Moreover, I came to appreciate and respect the courage that the patients have shown. There were other activities that I was involved with. I was the Vice-President of the Rotary Club from my school. As the Vice-President, I coordinated volunteer activities with my major accomplishment as Vice-President including donating medical equipment to children's hospital in Costa Rica. Moreover, I was a teacher for the inmates from San Quentin prison, which is one of the largest prisons in the USA. Inmates were studying for GED and I helped them with English and Math. Not only that, I was also a teacher at the St Cornellius School in city of Richmond. Most of the students there were from low income families and they were not well educated. I taught them different kinds of subjects they were struggling with and was a mentor for the students. After graduating from college, I volunteered at a radiology department of MD Anderson. By experiencing different kinds of activities, I have met so many kinds of people and because of that, I have been able to develop strong interpersonal skills, learning how to talk to people and how to interact with them effectively. I also learned to treat people equally no matter who they are and where they are from. I also learned that there are always those who need help in different parts of the world so I decided to live a life for people who are in need for help. To be well prepared for studying medicine, I majored in psychology. I thought a lot about which major would help me be best prepared for studying medicine, at one point considering biology, but I thought that I would have enough time to study biology once I was enrolled in medical school. As a result, I came to conclusion that majoring in psychology would be the best preparation for medical school. I expected that by majoring in psychology, I would be able to learn and know about the people in general. In other words, I wanted to understand people themselves before understanding their diseases. By majoring in psychology, I was able to study people in many different aspects. In clinical psychology, I learned about different types of mental disorders, and hormones that play an important role in brain. In developmental psychology meanwhile, I learned about how people develop to become who they are, whilst in personality psychology, I learned about how genetics and parenting play different roles in forming one's personality. In social psychology, I studied many different theories about how people tend to behave in different kinds of situations and in the stigma and prejudice class, I looked at how people form stigmas and prejudice against others and that most prejudice is formed unconsciously. The human brain prefers to have ideas that are definite, so it is the brain that forms the prejudice but not the will.. My deep understanding about people and how they behave, and think will help me to become a physician who will understand what patients are going through, not only physically, but also emotionally, and to be a physician who will sympathize with a patient's pain. By forming close relationships with patients, I want to become a physician who can motivate patients to be very active in the process of treatment. I believe the strong will of the patients can play a positive role in treatment. I want to become a physician who stands by their patients until they fully recover from their illness. I want to become a physician who never leaves his patient behind. MD Anderson Among the experiences that I had, my experience at MD Anderson as a researcher was one of the most memorable moments. During my stay in the best cancer center in the world, I learned a lot of lessons. Moreover, this experience helped me to form the concrete vision about what kind of a doctor that I want to be. I also learned that medical care has no borders and is achieved through teamwork from different departments of the hospital. In addition, I learned about the ideal hospital system by observing how the hospital is operated. I also learned a lot about cancer itself by participating in breast cancer research. The other thing that I was very impressed with is their culture of cooperation. To help the hospital and its patients, companies and workers and even the patients donated their money for the hospital. A great portion of their income came from public donations and there were a lot of volunteers in most departments of the hospital who helped the physicians and patients without any financial compensation. Physicians and researchers showed cooperation during the process of diagnosis and treatment. Physicians from different departments had frequent joint meeting and they were able to communicate effectively in order to find out most suitable plan for the patients. To achieve their motto " Making Cancer History" all of the members of the hospital became one. I realized that curing the disease is not about an individual's struggle but it is about cooperation and communication. Another thing that I realized from MD Anderson is that medicine has no borders. The cancer center was comprised of physicians from all over the world. Even though there were cultural and ethnical differences, these were not a barrier for them as long as they were competent physicians in their field of medicine. What mattered most was the skill and intelligence of the physicians but not their skin color or ethnicity. Research During my path into medicine, I was involved in many great research opportunities. When I was majoring in psychology at UC Berkeley, I was a research assistant for Professor Allison Harvey who is an expert in sleep. At her "Sleep Clinic", I was involved with insomnia research including interviewing patients who were suffering from a sleep disorder. I also monitored and collected data when the patients were taking polysonmography. Moreover, I was a research assistant for Professor Dacher Keltner, whose main research topic is emotion and social interaction. His lab focused on the social functions of emotion, arguing that emotions enable individuals to respond adaptively to the problems and opportunities that define human social living. After graduating from college, I went to MD Anderson to work as a researcher. My professor was a Chinese who graduated from Capital Medical University in Beijing. Our lab focused on dissecting mechanisms of resistance to targeted immuno therapies, and designing counteracting strategies to make patients respond better to anti-cancer therapies. My research topic was about "Lapatinib" which is the orally active drug for breast cancer and other solid tumors. It is dual tyrosine kinase inhibitor which interrupts the HER2 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathways. It is used for the treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer whose tumors overexpress HER2. The main goal of my research was to find the mechanism behind the resistance to Lapatinib, My co-authored research paper was ultimately published in "Molecular Cancer Therapeutics". The title of the article is “ Resistance that can be effectively reversed by a p110alpha-Selective PI3k inhibitor”. This article was published in January of 2018. Currently, I am a researcher in Severance Hospital in Korea. I work in the Department of Neurosurgery where my main research topic is Moyamoya disease, focusing on the cognition of patients with Moyamoya disease. The ultimate goal of my research is to find a correlation between social cognition and Moyamoya disease. After experiencing different kinds of research, I came to realize that research is a "key" in medicine. Therefore, I decided to become a physician who focuses not only on clinical medicine but also on research. Using my background in Psychology, I would like to become a neurologist who will give hope to patients who are suffering from a degenerative brain disease.

Construction has always been a desire of mine, and Construction Project Management in particular has interested me for some time. The field of Medicine has been highly intriguing for me. Additionally, my family is associated with social activities since long time. It was always an inspiration for me to help the society in a better way. I realized later that diagnosing people with the disease and providing medicines does not bring a permanent cure in most of the times. There always remains a possibility for further infection. With lots of research I discovered that elimination of diseases are required for a long term cure. Diseases like Yaws, Leprosy, Guinea worm, Small pox have been eliminated and people can feel secure against such diseases. Such extermination shall work only if we are able to invent methods that can bring such prosperous healthy life to all. To develop new medicines one must be through with human body and deep root anatomy as well physiology and other required fields necessary to formulate a cure! MBBS to my opinion allows a great opportunity to the students to learn the whole human system in details and systematically. Systemically, it requires completing MBBS and then further joining MD/MS/DM or such higher degrees to enter into the research field. Speaking about my academic life, I was always an inquisitive student throughout. I spent most of my school days in missionary school. So I was taught good etiquette and discipline. I completed my ICSE (Xth) from St. Xavier’s School with a good percentage of marks, i.e. 82.15%. Our school also encouraged us to participate in many co-curricular activities such as debate competition, science exhibition, essay competition, annual sports events. I was among those good athletics who grabbed medals home. We also participated in social events like National Forest day, National Health day, World Aids day and many others to create awareness among the public as well as the students. My love for medicine helped me to toil hard for this competition. To be a doctor, one needs immense patience, a great understanding, logical reasoning and a good heart. Apart from studies we were also taught meditation to keep our minds calm. I value these teachings and experience and I believe I acquired the qualities to study medicine. But getting stuck to the same thing and narrowing down my vision was becoming alarming as I understood I was going to lose my available opportunities. My interest in medicine and science in general began from a very early age. After observing an open cardiovascular surgery on television, I was blown away by the professionalism of the surgeons and the procedure itself. I have always been fascinated by the human body and the way each organ functions in order to keep this extraordinary machine working. Witnessing my mother on a hospital bed after having numerous heart attacks which eventually turned into a coronary heart disease in addition to losing my grandfather due to a heart attack and the helplessness I felt in both occasions unimaginably motivated and inspired me to participate in cardiovascular research and become a cardiologist one day. My interest was further developed whilst doing a biomedical science degree where I expanded my understanding of fundamental science, ranging from cells and molecules to human physiology and medical microbiology. Combining this knowledge with the research skills I obtained throughout my Honours year along with challenges that a master’s level research project brings is my biggest goal. My degree has enhanced my understanding of the various aspects of research and medicine. My studies have included problem based learning, facets of ethics in medicine and laboratory methods for disease diagnosis on a range of specimens. Being involved in frequent group work has not only developed my communication skills but also my ability to work as part of a team more successfully. My honour’s project was based on the use of Polymerase and Real-time polymerase chain reaction to investigate and identify the presence of various species within commercially available meat products. It also includes basic bioinformatics, DNA isolation and genetic analysis. I am currently completing my master’s degree in biomedical science, specialising in cardiovascular studies which is an enormous opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and experiences in the medical field. My participation in a work placement at Glasgow’s Townhead Health Centre shadowing a GP for a week gave me the opportunity to interact with patients, get to know more about their symptoms and condition acquire valuable experience observing the doctor’s technique of diagnosis in addition to his interaction and methods of conducting a patient interview and developing a medical history. I also arranged another week placement at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary Cardiology Department which was an incredible opportunity to observe medicine from a different perspective as well as familiarising myself with the challenges and pressure of working in a hospital environment. I was able to use an ECG and become familiar with abnormal heart rhythms, various ECG patterns and report interpretation methods. Furthermore I learned more about a variety of cardiac diagnostic tests including twenty four hours Holter and blood pressure monitors besides stress tests, pacemaker checks and echocardiograms which enormously developed my awareness of the available techniques and technology that can identify a patient’s heart condition. The caring aspect of medicine encouraged me to start volunteering at a local elderly care home where I worked alongside nurses which vastly improved my caring skills. I was caring for those with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, strokes as well as other conditions by ensuring residents take their medications on time, taking them for walks, serving food, assisting them in their daily activities. Being able to make even small improvements in their quality of life as well as giving a helping hand to those in need was an extremely rewarding experience. Keeping a healthy balance of social and academic life is crucial for me; hence I spend my free time playing guitar, keyboard, and composing hip hop music. I hold a black belt in Kickboxing and participate in daily weight training which builds up my physical strength and mental stamina which is useful when facing medicine’s pressure and challenges. Volunteering once a week at Bridging the Gap community for the past four years has allowed me to become an effective communicator by interacting with people of different background and age groups who are going through educational, immigration and family problems. I have been involved in many voluntary community projects such as creating music and a music video to raise awareness about young carers which got me invited to the Scottish Parliament, being involved in Police Scotland’s “Criminal Mind” album and fundraising at Glasgow’s Hospice. Although becoming a doctor involves a great amount of pressure and is a very demanding and challenging journey, I believe that I possess the motivation, dedication, commitment and empathy to succeed. Pharmacy and religion, from a personal perspective, are intertwined in some respect. "Who so ever kills a human being it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and who so ever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved all mankind". This particular quote comes directly from the religious text of the Islamic faith, the Qu'ran. It is one of key significance, as it highlights and quantifies the value of a human life so succinctly. In terms of its link to pharmacy, we as individuals are exposed to a myriad of prescription medications, which have all been cultivated for our well-being and survival. I am fascinated by the rapid acceleration in pharmaceutical and technological advancements that have and are currently unfolding, all in efforts to extend our lives as individuals and improve our overall quality of life. The shear influence of the pharmaceutical industry on the various facets of life, has lead me towards pursuing a career in pharmacy, a seemingly perfect fit. The passion I possess for my faith and the sciences ignited my vision to combine the two and thus, for my undergraduate studies, do a double major in Biology and Religion alongside a complimentary chemistry minor from University of Toronto. My undergraduate degree aided in my acquisition of further comprehension of biochemistry, as I view it as the primary component in developing the necessary background in studying Pharmacy, elevating my proficiency in analytical problem solving and numerical applications. Alongside my undergraduate degree, I completed a Pharmacy Technician Program. This program was vital in providing a first hand view of the day-to day skills required to fulfill the position of a pharmacist, both practical and analytical. Currently, I am employed at Costco's pharmacy department and also a part-time as a technician at Loblaws Pharmacy. I not only enjoy, but also excel in the fast-paced environment, not ever feeling as if it was a job. Retail pharmacy is often looked down upon in the pharmacy sector, but remains an integral part of healthcare, with decisions made based on physician recommendations and insurance plans, affording those in need, the care they seek. The information relayed throughout the chain of communication, from the physician to the pharmacist, must be clear and concise to be effective for the patient. Although it is regarded as the controversial side to pharmacy, it is likely where ill spend a major part of my career. I think it is extremely important that patients are monitored by aptly trained individuals who put patients first. After working for a few months, I long for more than a technician's role. In order to broaden my horizons, with respect to my career prospects, I registered with my provincial board of Pharmacy as a registered Pharmacy Technician. I felt that this was a positive step in accomplishing my ultimate goal of becoming a pharmacist. With the completion of my bachelor's degree and the Pharmacy Technician Co-op program, along with the qualification of a registered Technician, I have had access to multiple platforms to strengthen my own abilities and gain a deeper level of expertise in my field and the work that needs to be completed to get there which makes me an effective candidate of the pharmacy program. Whether it's direct patient care, communication or assuming a leadership role in making decisions, I have grown exponentially from a character point of view and am willing to study abroad to achieve my goal. At the end of the day, I would like to go home and be content in the difference I am making and the time I am putting forth to ensure the safety of patients. With all of the qualifications attained in the pharmacy field, I feel it is time to strive to the next stage and I am prepared to make the sacrifices needed to realize my dream of reaching out and helping someone. Huazhong University of Science Technology has been under my radar as one of the top school's to study abroad. I've always had a passion to go to different country to study, meet people around the world, adapt to various cultures. HUST has been the top 10 universities in China and hold a reputable status across the world due to it's affiliation with numerous universities across the world. With over 2000 students from 120 different universities, I will not feel like an outsider and will feel close to home with the multicultural society around me. I know this University will provide me with an experience of a lifetime and I cannot wait to be a HUST'er.
