From as far back as I can trace, I have always had a passion for building and construction; partly, I can ascribe this desire to the external influence of my relatives who happened to be professionals in that field already; but besides that, I admired the art and creativity involved. This triggered my choice of the most relevant subjects at advanced level, that is, Physics, Mathematics and Technical drawing. With that background, it was almost inevitable that I would follow the engineering line, based on advice and personal research, I zeroed down to civil engineering. For that matter, what defines the core of my interest in this particular course is that it provides a platform for growth and advancement in engineering and consequently, the world at large. Growing up in Addis Ababa, I was always intrigued by the big infrastructural constructs around the city. I was always fascinated with how they were built and how they came to be. My dad, being an engineer, would sometimes take me to construction sites, so I could see firsthand how those magnificent buildings were made. As time went on my love for engineering only grew. When I entered the 7th grade and started taking physics courses, I realized I had a knack for engineering. And I knew I had to pursue it. I knew I wanted to become a civil engineer like my dad and build amazing infrastructures in the developing nation I live in. My dad played a huge role in nurturing my love for engineering. He would always teach me new things and show me plans of new buildings yet to be constructed. This one time I remember him asking me to help him with the blueprints of a new project he was working on. I was so amazed on how my dad and his team were working on it, taking every element into account and how it might affect the buildings internal structure. I just couldn’t help but admire and aspire to be like them. My dad was also the first person to advise me to pursue my higher learning in China and told me about South China University of Technology. From the mid-1980s to early 2000s, there was a boom in television shows, like Dexter’s Laboratory, Back to the Future and Big Bang Theory series, which left young viewers with an enthusiastic attitude towards the natural and formal sciences. The shows allowed them to reason and become curious to discover if what they saw on screen could be possible- and even what made our screens light up! I also became curious about how I was able to see motion pictures on a screen. How could it work with just a push button? How we are able to capture any one’s actions on a memory stick? Having parents who were both accountants they weren’t of much help when I asked the big “why” and “how” scientific questions. As I grew into my teenage years, I switched up my tactics and begun to read a book called The Essentials of Physics and asked my teachers as well as my peers questions on how things work and what are alternative applications for these things an example of this is how oscillations are able to create signals we are able to use for communication. The answers I received became my gateway into a new universe of understanding and application. It gave me a new way to view the earth and why most objects around us have been shaped the way they are. The book, my teachers and peers became the foundation for my love in science as well as my love in math. This led me to me receiving 1’sin science and math in my Examination Council of Zambia grade 12 finals. During the wait for my acceptance into Hillcrest National Technical School in Livingstone to study my A-levels, I began to read more books that were related to both the formal and natural sciences like the Physics, Chemistry Demystified books series by Stan Gibilisco and Linda D. Williams respectively and the bird higher engineering mathematic 5th edition book by John Bird . These books were a form of egress from the boredom that was consuming me slowly, as I found joy in being able to understand and solve the problems within that book. These books enabled me to go through my A-level subjects with a smile on my face as I had started my preparation. Along the way, I got to experience a new way of viewing cultures as I was immersed with different people who came from all walks of life. These people showed me that life is not restricted to books but it is bunch of opportunities one must never take granted. I took up playing the guitar. I loved the way I could express myself and felt more empathy with others through music. My A-level subjects were Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. They appealed to me because they are the reasons everything happens around us. I learnt to appreciate the links between the subjects and how they could relative to my career choice: mechanical engineering. In mathematics, I found a joy so strong it could bend a beam of steel. It is the language that brings together all my subject choices. Every time I learnt something new in linear algebra - like its application in space manipulation -when I solved calculus problems involving real life applications or when figuring out the probability of manufacturing faults, I would fall in love again with this subject. Physics and chemistry: where can I begin explaining how important these two other subjects are to me and also to us as a human race? I could begin by explaining the wonder that is found in nearly everything in our universe: the atom. Or the way modern technology is heavily dependent on advancements/ research studies on these two subjects. They provide us with the guidelines to live in a much safe and ever changing environment. In physics we learnt all about energy and the absurdity of our own universe as we fell deeper into research in quantum mechanics. Chemistry supported physics by giving us the ability to identify the materials, quantities and where we are most likely to find them. There are the two subjects that very much like notes in a song: notes on their own have no meaning, but brought together can create something special. I received rewards for my hard work and determination in these subjects. I want to become an engineer to apply what I have learnt into real life. With the advancements in technology, diverse culture and the universities found in China I believe I could become a wonderful engineer whose sole goal is to bring the world of fiction into a realm reality.

Why SCUT? To answer this question I should explain “Why China?”, first. During my stays in different countries, I was very much involved in volunteering projects in these countries, in lieu of being just a tourist. In the summer of 2014, I went to the United States under an exchange program called Work and Travel. With this program I stayed in the States over 4 months, developed my language along with mingling with locals and trying to understand what it’s like to live like an American. Over the course of 4 months, I worked as a volunteer in the Seacoast Vineyard Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the very place where I met my girlfriend, 郭燕怡. We are together for almost 3 years now and during our relationship I visited China several times, got to experience everyday life in China and formed lots of friendships. I fall in love with China the very first time I have arrived at Guangzhou. I realized how blindfolded I was and wrong about Chinese people and Chinese culture. As soon as I had this epiphany, I knew that I had to live in China and contribute to it with my intellectual property, maybe working there as an engineer once I get the better of language barrier. Chinese is a very hard language. However, I like challenges. There’s nothing more noble in this life than work for one’s future. This is where SCUT comes in. Being in Guangzhou, where my girlfriend and friends live in, giving foreign students the opportunity of completing their masters degrees in English medium programs, and being in a great place among other world universities are the reasons why I would love to enroll at South China University of Technology. What Makes me a Stand Out Candidate ? Everyone likes the idea of promoting themselves to the fullest, however, they do go overboard doing so. To understand how I came to choose this university requires a little context. In A levels, I took on more subjects than were necessary.
