Why Sun Yat-sen ? To answer this question I should explain “Why China?”, first. During my stays in different countries, I was very much involved in volunteering projects in these countries, in lieu of being just a tourist. In the summer of 2014, I went to the United States under an exchange program called Work and Travel. With this program I stayed in the States over 4 months, developed my language along with mingling with locals and trying to understand what it’s like to live like an American. Over the course of 4 months, I worked as a volunteer in the Seacoast Vineyard Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the very place where I met my girlfriend, 郭燕怡. We are together for almost 3 years now and during our relationship I visited China several times, got to experience everyday life in China and formed lots of friendships. I fall in love with China the very first time I have arrived at Guangzhou. I realized how blindfolded I was and wrong about Chinese people and Chinese culture. As soon as I had this epiphany, I knew that I had to live in China and contribute to it with my intellectual property, maybe working there as an engineer once I get the better of language barrier. Chinese is a very hard language. However, I like challenges. There’s nothing more noble in this life than work for one’s future. This is where Sun Yat-sen University comes in. After observing an open cardiovascular surgery on television, I was blown away by the professionalism of the surgeons and the procedure itself. My interest was further developed whilst doing a biomedical science degree where I expanded my understanding of fundamental science, ranging from cells and molecules to human physiology and medical microbiology. I am currently completing my master’s degree in biomedical science, specialising in cardiovascular studies which is an enormous opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and experiences in the medical field. My participation in a work placement at Glasgow’s Townhead Health Centre shadowing a GP for a week gave me the opportunity to interact with patients, get to know more about their symptoms and condition acquire valuable experience observing the doctor’s technique of diagnosis in addition to his interaction and methods of conducting a patient interview and developing a medical history. I also arranged another week placement at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary Cardiology Department which was an incredible opportunity to observe medicine from a different perspective as well as familiarising myself with the challenges and pressure of working in a hospital environment. I was able to use an ECG and become familiar with abnormal heart rhythms, various ECG patterns and report interpretation methods. Furthermore I learned more about a variety of cardiac diagnostic tests including twenty four hours Holter and blood pressure monitors besides stress tests, pacemaker checks and echocardiograms which enormously developed my awareness of the available techniques and technology that can identify a patient’s heart condition. The caring aspect of medicine encouraged me to start volunteering at a local elderly care home where I worked alongside nurses which vastly improved my caring skills. I was caring for those with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, strokes as well as other conditions by ensuring residents take their medications on time, taking them for walks, serving food, assisting them in their daily activities. Being able to make even small improvements in their quality of life as well as giving a helping hand to those in need was an extremely rewarding experience. Keeping a healthy balance of social and academic life is crucial for me; hence I spend my free time playing guitar, keyboard, and composing hip hop music. I hold a black belt in Kickboxing and participate in daily weight training which builds up my physical strength and mental stamina which is useful when facing medicine’s pressure and challenges. Volunteering once a week at Bridging the Gap community for the past four years has allowed me to become an effective communicator by interacting with people of different background and age groups who are going through educational, immigration and family problems. I have been involved in many voluntary community projects such as creating music and a music video to raise awareness about young carers which got me invited to the Scottish Parliament, being involved in Police Scotland’s “Criminal Mind” album and fundraising at Glasgow’s Hospice. Although becoming a doctor involves a great amount of pressure and is a very demanding and challenging journey, I believe that I possess the motivation, dedication, commitment and empathy to succeed. My experiences have strengthened my aspiration be pursue this career.

I find this to be very intriguing to me because I will be able to take this opportunity to improve upon my Chinese speaking skills further. Due to the fact that I am from Thailand, I will be able to use my learning from Sun Yat-sen University and go provide help to the people in need back in my home country. I believe that Sun Yat-sen University will be able to grant me the skills and knowledge fundamental to my future and enabling me to make a difference to society.
Despite the excellent grades I have achieved in sciences, I haven't taken a traditional route to medicine. I consider every twist and turn of my life's course as strengthening my determination to become a doctor. I believe a medical education from Sun Yat Sen University would be a great fit to me as it is one of the top medical schools in China. The MBBS program is a very popular program with the teaching quality matching to international standards. The environment in Guangzhou also offers an academic, social and cultural experience of the finest quality. In addition, Zhongshan School of Medicine insists on an important concept since its foundation is to promote interdisciplinary and combination of teaching and scientific research with clinical activities. I chose the university because i am privileged study in a university which has a rich history prestige and very good and skilled professors.Its national ranking is excellent. Its university campus is lovely, lively, and beautiful.Accommodation is good. Affordable fees for tuition and accommodation if one considers the status o this university. I like to be part of the medical school. As a medical student i love to benefit from MBBS course and apply my knowledge to the society in future.
