He was a strong believer of change and was always with the hope that I would someday bring about a change in the fate of my country. When other kids played with stones for the fun of it, I played with stones to sharpen my numerical skills. When other kids sat at the feet of their grey hair grandfathers at night, to listen to folklores, I sat at the feet of mine listening to the great exploits and unforgettable inventions of scientists whose names have been etched on the marbles of fame. It is no wonder that I grew up being so creative and imaginative, constantly thinking of different ways to solve problem and a new approach to pre-existing difficulties. Puzzles became my best friend, books on mathematics, analytical thinking became a daily companion and my plastic building blocks never left my sight, as I was constantly building and rearranging. When it was time to make a choice of career, I could only be an Engineer and so I began my journey towards change at age 10. At the age of 13, I was officially accepted into the JETS club in my school, making me the youngest member in the school’s history. For me, this was a rare opportunity and a life changing acknowledgment. I identified a problem in my society and as much as paradoxical as it seems, I realized our blessing was a bane in Nigeria. Our source of great wealth- Crude Oil, kills us daily, in as much as it brings in revenue and as serves as a foreign exchange product. After in depth research, I realized that the source of death, majorly caused by oil spillage is constantly as a result of our corroded pipelines and the errors in construction. It was time to make a change by being in the field and not on the sidelines. I chose China University of geosciences because it is one of the universities having the best programs regarding the exploration, development and production of oil and gas fields, not only in China, but also in the world. I am very interested in such a program because I want to will apply the knowledge and skills that I will gain from there, to participate in verifying and resolving the speculations of hydrocarbons that surround Lake Kivu of Rwanda. Lake Kivu is one of the East African Rift Valley lakes, which are known to be geologically similar in all aspects. The fact that some of its counterparts such as Lake Albert of Uganda have successfully delivered on hydrocarbons, boost greatly the speculations in Lake Kivu. Hydrocarbons are an important resource, which can highly boost the economy of a country and change the lives of its citizens, if a sufficient quantity is discovered and put to good use. For this, I fell responsible of contributing to the exploration in Lake Kivu, so that I can contribute to the social and economic development of the country and its citizens. As geology is a new subject in Rwanda, there aren't many geologists. As far as I am concerned, I would be the only person holding a master's degree in oil and gas geoscience. This means that my contribution would not be limited to the explorations in Lake Kivu, but I would also contribute to the newly established school of mining and geology, in the University of Rwanda. I would also be able to provide advice in different institutions concerned with policy making, such as Rwanda Environment Management Agency, and the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board. In addition to this, many hydrocarbons’ deposits worldwide are being depleted, and hence new reserves need to be discovered to keep this important industry running. I believe that after completing my master’s degree in hydrocarbons geosciences, I will be able to contribute to researches aiming at new discoveries of hydrocarbons reserves, and inventing new methods of exploration and exploitation to maximize production in the petroleum industry. PERSONAL STATEMENT/ACADEMIC INTEREST I am applying to the Master of Science Program in Geodesy and Survey Engineering at the China University of Geosciences. I want to study this course because of my passion for research and training. The University of China University of Geosciences is chosen for this study because of the improved technology in the field of Geodesy and Survey Engineering. China as a country is a desired place of study because of the leading role in Innovation, Development and Production of virtually all things used in developing and developed nations. I studied Surveying & Geo-informatics at National Diploma, ND (2 years), Higher National Diploma in Surveying & Geo-informatics, HND (2year), Professional Diploma in Surveying and Geo-informatics (11/2 years) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, PGD (2 years). I am a Registered Surveyor by the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON). I had been involved in many Surveying Projects in the country. This degree will make me to acquire more skills & knowledge in the field of Geodesy and Survey Engineering to be able to research more and teach in my choosing career. However resource exploitation is to go hand in hand with environmental conservation and sustainability. Owing to limited resources I have not been able to proceed with further studies here in Tanzania or elsewhere as I lack the necessary funds. I am currently teaching Economics in one of the Senior High Schools in the country. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE I believe the world would be a better place if research is geared towards meeting the needs of humanity followed by effective implementation of outcomes derived from such careful scientific investigations by universities and research institutions. In light of this, I have decided to build a career in science, to be among a community of researchers investigating new ways to promote healthy coexistence between human activities and the environment This has motivated me to study Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering at the China University of Geosciences, Wuhan. With the knowledge, skills, I obtained from studying BSc Mineral Engineering coupled with the past experience acquired as Teaching and Research Assistant from the University of Mines and Technology, I have come to know the vast practical applications with issues of the environment (for example in the large and small scale mining companies in Ghana); thus caught my attention and created a thirst of knowledge in me to study my chosen programme. My motivation is to work in an international field related to Environmental Engineering. Therefore, I would like to gain deeper theoretical and practical knowledge in starting and managing most innovative projects in the environment (in the areas of waste water treatment and management, occupational health and safety, environmental issues relating to mining etc.).
