Program Description

Teaching Objective

This master program is designed for international students who are interested in Statistics. It is composed of the total twelve courses of Statistics Survey, Data Analysis, Forecast and Decision, Analysis of Multivariate Statistics and fundamental courses on Statistics.

Through a systematic study, students will obtain the relevant knowledge and skills for careers in information administration and statistics analysis in business enterprises, financial institutions, public administration departments and information consultation institutions.

Main Courses

Brief Introduction of Main Courses

It is composed of the total twelve courses such as Statistics Survey, Data Analysis, Forecast and Decision, Analysis of Multivariate Statistics and some fundamental courses on Statistics.

1. Nonparametric Estimation
This course mainly focuses on the nonparametric estimation method, which is a statistical method that allows the functional form of a fit to data to be obtained in the absence of any guidance or constraints from theory. Two types of nonparametric techniques are artificial neural networks and kernel estimation.

2. Stochastic Process
This course mainly focuses on the definition of Stochastic processes and its application. The course deals with Markov chains, Homogeneity transition probabilities, transition matrix, classification of states, poisson process, non-homogeneous processes, compound poisson processes, continuous time Markov chain with countable state space, invariant measures, countable state space and renewal theory and martingales.

3. Multivariate Statistical Analysis
The course mainly focuses on the theories and applications of multivariate data analysis and the content includes Principal Components Analysis, Factor Analysis, Correspondence Analysis, Canonical Correlation Analysis, Cluster Analysis, and Discriminant Analysis. And the course will also introduce practical cases using SAS and SPSS statistical software package.

4. Statistical Software
This course will give a brief introduction of R environment. R is an integrated suite of software facilities for data manipulation, calculation and graphical display, which is useful for statistical analysis and modeling. The contents of the course include data manipulation, statistical analysis, program design, description & graphical display and statistical simulation. Through learning this course, students will master the basic skills of statistical analysis and programming.

5. Mathematical Statistics
This course mainly focuses on the basic theories and methods of mathematical statistics, and the content mainly includes parameter estimation and hypothesis test. As to the parameter estimation, it is concerned with the unbiased estimator, the Bayes estimator, the Minimax estimator, the large sample estimator and interval estimator, while the optimization theory of hypothesis test (including the UMP test, the unbiased test and the invariance test) and the large sample test are introduced in the statistical hypothesis test.

6. Analysis of time series
The course mainly focuses on the theories and methods of modeling time series, and the content includes the model order, parameter estimation and diagnostic checking and some relevant theory knowledge in classic linear time series models such as the autoregressive (AR) models, moving average (MA) models, autoregressive and moving average (ARMA) models, and further introduces the fundamental content and the newest development on the nonlinear time series analysis.

Social Practice
Social practice includes enterprise visit and survey, writing of reports or essays, professional training, and writing of dissertation.

Duration: 2.5 to 4 years, 2.5 to 4 years, normally 2.5 years

Credits and Certification

Thirty-six credits are required, including 6 credits for dissertation. Qualified students will be granted certificates of graduation and Master Degree of Science in Statistics.
