Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (ZCMU) is a teaching and research-oriented university with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Chinese materia medica as its leading subjects. As a provincial key university in Zhejiang, it is under the joint development by the Provincial Government of Zhejiang, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Ministry of Education.

Zhejiang Chinese Medical University is located near the south bank of Qiantang River, in the city of Hangzhou, a world-famous tourist resort known for its beautiful scenery and rich cultural heritage. Based on Zhejiang Training School of TCM, founded in 1953, Zhejiang College of TCM was officially established in 1959 and relocated at the present place in 2000. In February 2006, it was renamed as Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. In September 2015, Fuchun Campus was put into use. The university now has two campuses covering an area of nearly 1000 mu, the total construction area exceeds 470,000 square meters.

The university has 14 schools and 1 independent college. They are the First School of Medicine, the Second School of Medicine, the Third School of Medicine (School of Rehabilitation Medicine), the Fourth School of Medicine, School of Basic Medical Science (School of Public Health), School of Stomatological Medicine, School of Pharmaceutical Science, School of Nursing, School of Medical Technology, School of Life Science, School of Humanities and Management, School of Marxism, School of Continuous Education, School of International Education, and Binjiang College (independent college). Besides 20 indirectly affiliated hospitals, ZCMU has 3 directly affiliated hospitals. They are the First Affiliated Hospital (Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of TCM), the Second Affiliated Hospital (Zhejiang Xinhua Hospital), the Third Affiliated Hospital (Zhejiang Zhongshan Hospital).

ZCMU is one of the first batch of universities in China to recruit and cultivate postgraduates of TCM, and take the lead among Zhejiang provincial universities to be awarded the right to confer doctoral degrees and establish post-doctoral scientific research stations. It has established 3 post-doctoral scientific research stations that respectively specialize in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Pharmacology, and Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. It offers 31 undergraduate majors, covering five disciplines of medicine, science, engineering, management and literature. So far there are 17,123 full-time students (including independent college) in ZCMU, including 14,042 undergraduates, 2,178 master students, 273 doctoral students and 630 overseas students.

ZCMU is a national demonstration base for cultivating innovative talents. It has independently cultivated a number of high-level talents, including academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, chief scientist of the 973 Program, National Masters of TCM, National Famous Doctors of TCM, and candidates of the National New Century Talents Project. Currently, ZCMU has more than 1,300 teaching and administrative staff (not including hospitals) and more than 330 senior professional and technical personnel (including directly affiliated hospitals), including distinguished professors with the title of "Yangtze River Scholar" awarded by the Ministry of Education, special experts of Zhejiang province, experts with State Council special allowance, winners of national outstanding youth science fund, teaching masters, provincial masters of TCM, and distinguished professors with the title of “Qiantang River Scholar”.

ZCMU insists on taking the moral education as the foundation and strives to improve the quality of education and teaching. It has 5 state-level characteristic specialties, 14 dominant and characteristic specialties under the 13th Five-Year Plan of Zhejiang province, 11 national superior courses, and 1 state-level teaching group. It has built a batch of teaching platforms, such as national experimental teaching demonstration center and national off-campus practice base for college students. It has won 3 national teaching achievement awards and has been awarded "Excellence" twice in undergraduate teaching evaluation by the Ministry of Education. The quality of students enrolled and student cultivation has been constantly improved. In recent years, graduates' passing rates of doctor qualification examination ranked among the top of similar colleges and universities in China.

ZCMU strives to promote discipline construction and constantly improves its capabilities of sci-tech innovation and service. It's among the first batch of Zhejiang provincial universities to be awarded national key discipline (Clinical Foundation of TCM). Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Pharmacology are among the second batch of characteristic and preponderant key disciplines of Zhejiang Province; Clinical Medicine, pharmacology and toxicology are ranked in the top 1% of ESI. It has 2 national clinical research bases of TCM and a number of science and innovation platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of TCM Research, Zhejiang "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center", Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory, Zhejiang Engineering Research Center and Zhejiang International Sci-tech Cooperation Base. It has won 5 National Awards in Sci-tech Progress and Technological Invention, and 10 Provincial Sci-tech first prizes. It hosts two academic journals---Journal of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and Zhejiang Clinical Medicine. It has carried out industry-university-research strategic cooperation with more than 10 cities (counties and districts) inside and outside Zhejiang province, Zhejiang International Trade Group and other well-known enterprises, boosting industrial transformation and upgrading and serving local economic and social developments as well as the development of TCM.

ZCMU gives full play to the advantages of TCM and actively promotes international exchanges and cooperation. It has established cooperative relationships with more than 90 educational, scientific research and medical units in more than 30 countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. It has hired more than 50 foreign experts and scholars as visiting professors, has established Confucius Institutes at Portugal Coimbra University and Western Cape University in South Africa, and has built overseas TCM centers in Romania, Israel and Belarus. ZUMU is one of the first batch of TCM universities that have been granted the right to recruit students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and the right to enroll students from Hong Kong without examination. It has built a provincial cultural and educational base of TCM for overseas students, and has enrolled students from more than 60 countries and regions.
