The Master of Science in Management (MSM) Program aims to offer a rigorous and specialized training program to candidates with interests in the field of management. It provides students with an international and flexible program to acquire sound foundation for pursuing higher academic degree programs and to develop skills and ability to analyze and solve managerial issues.
a. Dual-track option
The MSM program offers students the option to choose between the academic track and practical track. Academic track students are trained to perform high-level academic research under the guidance of faculty members. Students on the practical track develop extensive management knowledge and acquire a deep understanding of doing business in China as well as globally.
b. Mode of Instruction
All courses in the MSM program are taught in English. Lessons will be conducted through lectures, interactive discussions, case analysis, laboratory exercises, and group projects.
c. Duration of Program
The two year full-time program comprise of four semesters. Students typically complete all coursework requirements by the third semesters. In their last semester, students will engage in thesis writing or internship.
d. Graduation Requirements
Students are required to complete at least 38 credits in order to graduate. Students on the academic track are required to complete an academic thesis under the supervision of a thesis advisor. Students on the practical track need to complete a period of internship and submit a report.
Statistical Methods |
This course is an introduction to applied statistics and data analysis. It closely integrates various statistical techniques with concepts from business and clearly demonstrates the power of statistical methods in the real world of business. Through the course, students will master the basic statistical methods and are able to use SPSS to solve practical problems. Meantime this course’s learning may lay the groundwork for the future study of advanced statistical methods. |
Financial and Managerial Accounting |
The course aims to provide the students following knowledge: (1) a basic understanding of the financial accounting information role in business and society; (2) a basic understanding of the managerial accounting information role in business decision-making; (3) Provides insights on how businesses operate and enables students to become familiar with the conventions used by business to make decisions and how accounting information is reported to managers. The students will be also taught how to use accounting information for planning, product costing, performance assessment, and non-routine decision making. |
Organizational Behavior |
This course is designed to acquaint students with the theories of behavior of people in social organizations. Specifically it aims to: Analyze behavior patterns in work places and how to make use of this to improve organizational performance, gain some understanding of some factors that influence an employee's relationships to superiors, coworkers and subordinates, acquire insight into the functioning of teams and understand why the norms and values of teams, contribute to overall organizational goals. Through a study of power, influence, conflicts and coalition formation, students will come to understand the nature of politics in organizations, introduce students to several motivational models to help them diagnose organizational problems and to successfully prescribe solutions based on the factors identified by these models and lastly, to evaluate how individual and group influences organization performance. Topics include management, leadership, change, team development, dynamics and teamwork and transforming business processes and process improvement structure. |
Business Strategy |
This course is concerned with the concept and basic theoretical viewpoints of business strategy. The course will provide students with the basic knowledge to understand and solve problems in business strategy, Students will also acquire the knowledge on the analytical tools of business strategy to diagnose the competitive position of a business, evaluate business strategies, and analyze specific business options. |
Operations Management |
In this course, we will focus on operations strategies, processes, and techniques that would enable an organization to compete effectively in the global marketplace. The major themes include operations strategies, operations practices (such as JIT, TQM, logistics, SCM, BPR, etc), operational performance and other important topics. |
Marketing Management: A China Focus |
This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in designing and executing marketing activities in China. The topic will cover following activities: (1) how to initiate market research project in China, (2) how to probe Chinese consumers’ preference, (3) how to design marketing plan in China, (4) how to establish distribution channels in China, etc. The role of Guanxi in Chinese business life will be also discussed. |
Human Resource Management: A Global Perspective |
The course provides an introduction to the critical issues facing organizations in simultaneously managing their human resources at home and abroad. It focuses on the connection between corporate strategies and the effective management of human resources, which at times, may require differing policies across countries. The course is based on the notion that competitive firms and economies require appropriate structures, policies, and strategies for managing their employees at every level of the enterprise. This is particularly true of multinational enterprises (MNEs) and transnational corporations (TCs) intricately involved in a global environment. |
