This doctoral program is an English program offered by the National School of Development at Peking University. The program is aimed at cultivating cross-disciplinary talents with strong knowledge and competence required for national development. Participants will learn not only theories in this regard, but more importantly, how to apply the theories to practice.

1. Number of Students to be Admitted

We are going to admit 10 overseas students in year 2017.

2. Program Duration

This is a four-year program, but participants are allowed to complete the program within a period of 3-5 years. The language of course instruction is English.

3. Application Materials

1) Completed application form for international students. Please go to http://www.studyatpku.com to complete the application form online and have it printed. The printed form should be signed and have a photo posted on it.

2) Original bachelor and master degree certificates in Chinese or English or notarized copies in Chinese or English;

3) Official bachelor and master transcripts in Chinese or English or notarized copies in Chinese or English;

4) A 1-2 page personal statement in English, outlining the applicant’s interests and reasons for seeking the degree.

5) Two original recommendation letters in Chinese or English. The referees should be professors or persons with comparable titles.

6) Applicants whose native language is not English or whose college studies were completed in a language other than English are required to submit one of the following documents as evidence of language proficiency: TOEFL of no less than 100, GRE of no less than 1300, or IELTS of no less than 7.0.

7) A copy of valid passport.

8) Table of contents and abstracts of academic publications and any other original achievement in the applicant’s field of study.

9) Two 2-inch photos in hard copy.

Note: Two copies of the above application materials are required, one original and one duplicated. The envelope must be marked “Application for Ph. D in Theoretical Economics Program (Nation Development)”. None of the application materials will be returned.

4. Admission Evaluation

Initial screening: The admission committee of the National School of Development selects qualified students based on application information.

Interview: Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview at the National School of Development, Peking University. Interviews will be conducted in English, and exact dates will be announced later.

Admission: An official admission notice will be sent to the admitted candidates by the end of June, 2017.

5. Registration Period

September 2017 (specified in the Admission Notice)

6. Tuition Fee

RMB 32,000 per year.

7. Scholarships

8. Degree Conference

A doctoral degree in Theoretical Economics will be conferred to the program participant after his/her successful completion of required credits and dissertation.

1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, and have attained a master degree.

2) Competitive applicants should have good academic performance, strong references, and some research experience, with a senior position in a government agency;

3) Applicants whose native language is not English or whose college studies were completed in a language other than English, must provide evidence of English proficiency—TOEFL, GRE or IELTS.

Graduation certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.

*7. Academic transcript of Master Degree

Academic transcript of highest education in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization.

*8. Two recommendation letters from your referees

The referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your recent academic work. The format of the recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English.

9. Copy of article or papers published

Table of contents and abstracts of your academic publications and any other original achievement in your field of study

*10. Statement of purpose

800 words for master program and 1500 words for doctorate program, must be in Chinese

*11. Letter of guarantee

The guardian should write out his/her name, nationality, occupation and address (if an organization acts as the guardian, reference to the organization should be made clear).

12. the certified paper documents

i.e the original certified documents issued by the local Chinese Embassy officer. No matter you will be admitted or not, the materials will be kept in the university permanently.
