At 5 years old I never questioned where buildings came from. So when I learnt that my grandfather built the house I have lived in for all my life, brick by brick, I was in awe. I remember staring at every nook and cranny of house, trying to figure out how everything was built, from the windows to the floor tiles. I had always been fascinated with art, my doodles on the walls were limitless. One day, a friend of my mother’s introduced me to the world of architecture. Upon visiting her home I was entranced by the alien sketches on the giant rolls of paper. I learnt that those were floor plans, and seeked to master the curious symbols that it comprised of. Soon I was drafting designs of my dream house with slides replacing all staircases. I lived in a very rural town surrounded by rainforests. Growing up surrounded my nature, I have always been inclined to more organic designs. Therefore, Alvar Aalto and Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture held great appeal to me. Aalto’s modernist creations ahead of his time with varied materials was my first introduction to the world of architecture and Niemeyer’s use of curves in balance with rectilinear forms made his architecture particularly striking. However, living in such a small town, my choices were limited in secondary education. None of them offered art, which was something I’ve always had a passion for. But I was not deterred, I diligently studied and was offered a scholarship in an International school to study IGCSE, where I found that along with art I had a passion for Physics as well. It was also the first time I had lived in a city. Seeing a skyscraper on a screen in no way compares to the real thing. After my IGCSEs I was offered a second scholarship to study the International Baccalaureate in Kuala Lumpur. I love exploring the city of Kuala Lumpur, even after being here for a year and a half, I still enter buildings and I find myself so engrossed by the designs I forget what it was I had intended to do there. It may not seem like much, but these experiences truly spurred me to love architecture even more. My experience in the multicultural landscape of Malaysia has helped me grow as a person as it brings about people from all walks of life, with different cultures and viewpoints in which we can help each other expand each others minds and outlooks. It also led me to understand the importance of social considerations when designing architecture as well. My humbler origins have also ingrained in me the the importance of being pragmatic. I believe this to be an indispensable quality that should be incorporated hand in hand along with aesthetics. One of the co-curricular activities I particularly enjoy is the public speaking. As a child I tended to be soft spoken. I joined a speech competition to help boost my confidence and as a chance to step out of my comfort zone. It also helped me discover ways to share my passions more freely and discuss exciting and complex ideas with greater ease. I believe the ability to convey one's ideas is essential when aspiring to become an architect. Becoming the vice president of the Toastmasters club also allowed me to push me to the limits of my potential, learn my weaknesses and broaden my horizons. I have learned many valuable lessons in leadership and the importance of being a team player from my experience. Architecture, as a discipline that integrates creativity, pragmatism with an understanding of people and place, it leaves me fascinated. Four years ago I started studying Chinese at the German School of Barcelona as an extra school activity. Step by step I became more interested in learning language and also Chinese culture. In summer of 2015 thanks to Hanban, some students went to a summer campus in Harbin during two weeks. Over time I learned that it requires patience and an immense understanding of psychology to provide consolation to such patients for their well being. Additionally, my family is associated with social activities since long time. It was always an inspiration for me to help the society in a better way. I always have a keen interest in the field of biology and medicine and I found curing people is one of the best possible ways I can help the society. I realized later that diagnosing people with the disease and providing medicines does not bring a permanent cure in most of the times. There always remains a possibility for further infection. With lots of research I discovered that elimination of diseases are required for a long term cure. Diseases like Yaws, Leprosy, Guinea worm, Small pox have been eliminated and people can feel secure against such diseases. Such extermination shall work only if we are able to invent methods that can bring such prosperous healthy life to all. To develop new medicines one must be through with human body and deep root anatomy as well physiology and other required fields necessary to formulate a cure! MBBS to my opinion allows a great opportunity to the students to learn the whole human system in details and systematically. Systemically, it requires completing MBBS and then further joining MD/MS/DM or such higher degrees to enter into the research field. Speaking about my academic life, I was always an inquisitive student throughout. I spent most of my school days in missionary school. So I was taught good etiquette and discipline. I completed my ICSE (Xth) from St. Xavier’s School with a good percentage of marks, i.e. 82.15%. Our school also encouraged us to participate in many co-curricular activities such as debate competition, science exhibition, essay competition, annual sports events. I was among those good athletics who grabbed medals home. We also participated in social events like National Forest day, National Health day, World Aids day and many others to create awareness among the public as well as the students. After completing my ICSE I moved to East West Model School for my class XII. In this school we were taught all the science subjects with great care and in details. I learned to delve deep into biology with the help of my biology teacher who always encouraged my enthusiasm for biology and also act as a mentor for me to apply for medicine as further course. After completing ISC I decided to appear for joint entrance examination which is mandatory for all medical aspirants. As it requires a deep study and preparation, to clear the exam, I chose to drop a year and attended a renowned institute for the preparation. The competition was so tough that I missed my chance by inches. I took a second chance which was a tough decision and yet I failed at it. My love for medicine helped me to toil hard for this competition. To be a doctor, one needs immense patience, a great understanding, logical reasoning and a good heart. Apart from studies we were also taught meditation to keep our minds calm. I value these teachings and experience and I believe I acquired the qualities to study medicine. But getting stuck to the same thing and narrowing down my vision was becoming alarming as I understood I was going to lose my available opportunities. I decided to apply for Microbiology and this decision was only because I could relate medicine to it and its future prospective. Even after completing one year I still believe MBBS would help me to reach a great height as I know that I would love studying and its application for the society. I undertook intensive studies in demanding courses, which required me to demonstrate individual thought and initiative. Additionally, being a black belt in Tang Soo Do and kickboxing provided me the necessary skills to participate in community efforts to benefit young women through teaching them self-defense, so that they can feel empowered and build confidence by staying happy and healthy. I believe Tongji University’s unique resources in the medical field and sciences make it the ideal academic environment for me to continue and to ultimately thrive as both a student and as an individual. I want to go into the medical field and I’ve always been interested in the East Asian countries. Attending Tongji University will help me achieve both of these goals. My interest in medicine and science in general began from a very early age. After observing an open cardiovascular surgery on television, I was blown away by the professionalism of the surgeons and the procedure itself. I have always been fascinated by the human body and the way each organ functions in order to keep this extraordinary machine working. Witnessing my mother on a hospital bed after having numerous heart attacks which eventually turned into a coronary heart disease in addition to losing my grandfather due to a heart attack and the helplessness I felt in both occasions unimaginably motivated and inspired me to participate in cardiovascular research and become a cardiologist one day. My interest was further developed whilst doing a biomedical science degree where I expanded my understanding of fundamental science, ranging from cells and molecules to human physiology and medical microbiology. Combining this knowledge with the research skills I obtained throughout my Honours year along with challenges that a master’s level research project brings is my biggest goal. My degree has enhanced my understanding of the various aspects of research and medicine. My studies have included problem based learning, facets of ethics in medicine and laboratory methods for disease diagnosis on a range of specimens. Being involved in frequent group work has not only developed my communication skills but also my ability to work as part of a team more successfully. My honour’s project was based on the use of Polymerase and Real-time polymerase chain reaction to investigate and identify the presence of various species within commercially available meat products. It also includes basic bioinformatics, DNA isolation and genetic analysis. I am currently completing my master’s degree in biomedical science, specialising in cardiovascular studies which is an enormous opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and experiences in the medical field. My participation in a work placement at Glasgow’s Townhead Health Centre shadowing a GP for a week gave me the opportunity to interact with patients, get to know more about their symptoms and condition acquire valuable experience observing the doctor’s technique of diagnosis in addition to his interaction and methods of conducting a patient interview and developing a medical history. I also arranged another week placement at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary Cardiology Department which was an incredible opportunity to observe medicine from a different perspective as well as familiarising myself with the challenges and pressure of working in a hospital environment. I was able to use an ECG and become familiar with abnormal heart rhythms, various ECG patterns and report interpretation methods. Furthermore I learned more about a variety of cardiac diagnostic tests including twenty four hours Holter and blood pressure monitors besides stress tests, pacemaker checks and echocardiograms which enormously developed my awareness of the available techniques and technology that can identify a patient’s heart condition. The caring aspect of medicine encouraged me to start volunteering at a local elderly care home where I worked alongside nurses which vastly improved my caring skills. I was caring for those with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, strokes as well as other conditions by ensuring residents take their medications on time, taking them for walks, serving food, assisting them in their daily activities. Being able to make even small improvements in their quality of life as well as giving a helping hand to those in need was an extremely rewarding experience. Keeping a healthy balance of social and academic life is crucial for me; hence I spend my free time playing guitar, keyboard, and composing hip hop music. I hold a black belt in Kickboxing and participate in daily weight training which builds up my physical strength and mental stamina which is useful when facing medicine’s pressure and challenges. Volunteering once a week at Bridging the Gap community for the past four years has allowed me to become an effective communicator by interacting with people of different background and age groups who are going through educational, immigration and family problems. I have been involved in many voluntary community projects such as creating music and a music video to raise awareness about young carers which got me invited to the Scottish Parliament, being involved in Police Scotland’s “Criminal Mind” album and fundraising at Glasgow’s Hospice. Although becoming a doctor involves a great amount of pressure and is a very demanding and challenging journey, I believe that I possess the motivation, dedication, commitment and empathy to succeed. My experiences have strengthened my aspiration be pursue this career.
