When I was in high school I decided to be an engineer and for that I worked hard and got admitted in the best engineering university of my country. I chose Materials Engineering as it was a relative new branch of engineering in Pakistan. During my study I realized that to be successful in this world, one must have best of both worlds which in this case is engineering and management. This belief was further solidified when I attended a seminar in which many alumni of our department also emphasized on this too and how it was helping them in the corporate world. So, I reshaped my goals and priorities and decided that after my graduation I will gain some experience in the market and then do my masters in a management course. From the mid-1980s to early 2000s, there was a boom in television shows, like Dexter’s Laboratory, Back to the Future and Big Bang Theory series, which left young viewers with an enthusiastic attitude towards the natural and formal sciences. The shows allowed them to reason and become curious to discover if what they saw on screen could be possible- and even what made our screens light up! I also became curious about how I was able to see motion pictures on a screen. How could it work with just a push button? How we are able to capture any one’s actions on a memory stick? Having parents who were both accountants they weren’t of much help when I asked the big “why” and “how” scientific questions. As I grew into my teenage years, I switched up my tactics and begun to read a book called The Essentials of Physics and asked my teachers as well as my peers questions on how things work and what are alternative applications for these things an example of this is how oscillations are able to create signals we are able to use for communication. The answers I received became my gateway into a new universe of understanding and application. It gave me a new way to view the earth and why most objects around us have been shaped the way they are. The book, my teachers and peers became the foundation for my love in science as well as my love in math. This led me to me receiving 1’sin science and math in my Examination Council of Zambia grade 12 finals. During the wait for my acceptance into Hillcrest National Technical School in Livingstone to study my A-levels, I began to read more books that were related to both the formal and natural sciences like the Physics, Chemistry Demystified books series by Stan Gibilisco and Linda D. Williams respectively and the bird higher engineering mathematic 5th edition book by John Bird . These books were a form of egress from the boredom that was consuming me slowly, as I found joy in being able to understand and solve the problems within that book. These books enabled me to go through my A-level subjects with a smile on my face as I had started my preparation. Along the way, I got to experience a new way of viewing cultures as I was immersed with different people who came from all walks of life. These people showed me that life is not restricted to books but it is bunch of opportunities one must never take granted. I took up playing the guitar. I loved the way I could express myself and felt more empathy with others through music. My A-level subjects were Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. They appealed to me because they are the reasons everything happens around us. I learnt to appreciate the links between the subjects and how they could relative to my career choice: mechanical engineering. In mathematics, I found a joy so strong it could bend a beam of steel. It is the language that brings together all my subject choices. Every time I learnt something new in linear algebra - like its application in space manipulation -when I solved calculus problems involving real life applications or when figuring out the probability of manufacturing faults, I would fall in love again with this subject. Physics and chemistry: where can I begin explaining how important these two other subjects are to me and also to us as a human race? I could begin by explaining the wonder that is found in nearly everything in our universe: the atom. Or the way modern technology is heavily dependent on advancements/ research studies on these two subjects. They provide us with the guidelines to live in a much safe and ever changing environment. In physics we learnt all about energy and the absurdity of our own universe as we fell deeper into research in quantum mechanics. Chemistry supported physics by giving us the ability to identify the materials, quantities and where we are most likely to find them. There are the two subjects that very much like notes in a song: notes on their own have no meaning, but brought together can create something special. I received rewards for my hard work and determination in these subjects. I want to become an engineer to apply what I have learnt into real life. With the advancements in technology, diverse culture and the universities found in China I believe I could become a wonderful engineer whose sole goal is to bring the world of fiction into a realm reality.

PERSONAL STATEMENT GADZE JEREMIAH FLAVIAN KWAME MASTERS IN CRIMINAL LAW When growing up, I had the desire of looking into critical crime situations across the world, maybe because my father was into the military and later had his way into the Bureau of National Investigation for some months before leaving everything in order to go into full-time ministry as a pastor. Even though we can say, there is a generic etiology to my strong forensic desires, I feel it’s just the tip of the iceberg. In Secondary school, I often go online to read about some crimes that have taken place at various places in the world, and I sit to read meaning into what actually happened. I sometimes print the crime stories and create a portfolio of them. I later attach the crime findings from expects to the earlier stories and I evaluate them. However, a brutal attack on my family and myself by a gang of notorious criminals on the 11th August, 2013 strengthened my desire to become a crime investigator in the future, in order to help cut down crime. In order to fulfil my life dream, I studied Psychology at the Undergraduate level, at University of Ghana, where I completed with a final GPA of 3.56/4.0. While in tertiary school, I worked as a part-time teacher in Danadsy School for four years. As a teacher, I worked on the disciplinary board of the school, and chaired the investigation of many deviant and crime related behaviors, such as internet fraud; pick pocketing and others that existed among students. After tertiary education, I served my nation as a service personnel at University of Ghana (Psychology Department) as a teaching assistant. Alongside, I registered for six (6) online forensic professional courses on “futurelearn.com”, but have completed three of them with distinction in all, and yet to pay for the certificates (however, the records of my performance can be proved on their website). My strong desire to study the course drived me to start looking into a research work which I titled “Adults Cyber- Crime Offenders: The concept of Immunity, on a cross-cultural basis”. I wish to research into the criminal legal systems of Ghana and write a final dissertation concerning it upon completion of my master’s program. I would like to move away from home and experience the beautiful culture of China. I have read great reviews about this university and I would like to be a part of it because I believe the standard of teaching, as well as my dedication and determination will allow me to become a great doctor to help others. My interest in medicine and science in general began from a very early age. After observing an open cardiovascular surgery on television, I was blown away by the professionalism of the surgeons and the procedure itself. I have always been fascinated by the human body and the way each organ functions in order to keep this extraordinary machine working. Witnessing my mother on a hospital bed after having numerous heart attacks which eventually turned into a coronary heart disease in addition to losing my grandfather due to a heart attack and the helplessness I felt in both occasions unimaginably motivated and inspired me to participate in cardiovascular research and become a cardiologist one day. My interest was further developed whilst doing a biomedical science degree where I expanded my understanding of fundamental science, ranging from cells and molecules to human physiology and medical microbiology. Combining this knowledge with the research skills I obtained throughout my Honours year along with challenges that a master’s level research project brings is my biggest goal. My degree has enhanced my understanding of the various aspects of research and medicine. My studies have included problem based learning, facets of ethics in medicine and laboratory methods for disease diagnosis on a range of specimens. Being involved in frequent group work has not only developed my communication skills but also my ability to work as part of a team more successfully. My honour’s project was based on the use of Polymerase and Real-time polymerase chain reaction to investigate and identify the presence of various species within commercially available meat products. It also includes basic bioinformatics, DNA isolation and genetic analysis. I am currently completing my master’s degree in biomedical science, specialising in cardiovascular studies which is an enormous opportunity for me to expand my knowledge and experiences in the medical field. My participation in a work placement at Glasgow’s Townhead Health Centre shadowing a GP for a week gave me the opportunity to interact with patients, get to know more about their symptoms and condition acquire valuable experience observing the doctor’s technique of diagnosis in addition to his interaction and methods of conducting a patient interview and developing a medical history. I also arranged another week placement at Glasgow’s Royal Infirmary Cardiology Department which was an incredible opportunity to observe medicine from a different perspective as well as familiarising myself with the challenges and pressure of working in a hospital environment. I was able to use an ECG and become familiar with abnormal heart rhythms, various ECG patterns and report interpretation methods. Furthermore I learned more about a variety of cardiac diagnostic tests including twenty four hours Holter and blood pressure monitors besides stress tests, pacemaker checks and echocardiograms which enormously developed my awareness of the available techniques and technology that can identify a patient’s heart condition. The caring aspect of medicine encouraged me to start volunteering at a local elderly care home where I worked alongside nurses which vastly improved my caring skills. I was caring for those with Alzheimer’s, diabetes, strokes as well as other conditions by ensuring residents take their medications on time, taking them for walks, serving food, assisting them in their daily activities. Being able to make even small improvements in their quality of life as well as giving a helping hand to those in need was an extremely rewarding experience. Keeping a healthy balance of social and academic life is crucial for me; hence I spend my free time playing guitar, keyboard, and composing hip hop music. I hold a black belt in Kickboxing and participate in daily weight training which builds up my physical strength and mental stamina which is useful when facing medicine’s pressure and challenges. Volunteering once a week at Bridging the Gap community for the past four years has allowed me to become an effective communicator by interacting with people of different background and age groups who are going through educational, immigration and family problems. I have been involved in many voluntary community projects such as creating music and a music video to raise awareness about young carers which got me invited to the Scottish Parliament, being involved in Police Scotland’s “Criminal Mind” album and fundraising at Glasgow’s Hospice. Although becoming a doctor involves a great amount of pressure and is a very demanding and challenging journey, I believe that I possess the motivation, dedication, commitment and empathy to succeed. My experiences have strengthened my aspiration be pursue this career.
