I have been working as an engineer at a company that focuses on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) based systems for almost one year and up to now, I have taken parts in various maintenance operations, retrofits and exhibitions. From these experiences, I observed the need for professionals who can combine theoretical knowledge with hands on practice. On the other hand, information on branches such as mine is generally introduced at master’s degree courses and taking these courses is a very good opportunity instead of waiting in office for an opportunity to learn something. There are so many reasons for which i chose this university. But the main reason is the good training of students and good facilities.
My main interest lies in the mathematical modeling of Physical, mainly mechanical systems. I adopted this passion by studying Newtonian Mechanics (Fluid+Solid), Thermodynamics, and Heat Transfer etc. It further raised to Numerical Simulations when I undertook a project “Dragonfly airfoil simulation”, with Dr Adnan Maqsood (National University of Science and Technology) in 2014, it was the first time that I ever employed the practical use of software such as Solidworks/Ansys etc. Working on those simulations for the brief period of 2 months gave me some software expertise and at the same time inspired me to learn more about CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)/FEA (Finite Element Analysis). Consequently, I was led to select my Bachelor's thesis, title in CFD "Effects of Winglets in Wind turbine blade for vortex reduction". It was a multi-disciplinary project: The aerodynamics of the Wind turbine + FSI (Fluid Structure Interaction), so in general, it was the combination of Solid and Fluid mechanics. During Final year project I worked extensively on simulation software: Ansys and Solidworks. While working on those software a void was felt, of not having the ample theoretical knowledge of things operating behind the screen. Therefore, along the way, the underlying mathematics behind the simulation intrigued me: such as Finite Volume/Finite Element methods etc. Because for the completion of a person as an Engineer, he must not only understand the physical Laws but at the same time also equip himself with the appropriate Mathematical tools. Now, along with further enhancing my software skills, I am greatly interested in learning the background Mathematical Techniques used in solving process related to fluid flow, heat transfer analysis and also the underlying natural laws which govern their behaviors. Therefore, Fluid Mechanics is the field which is fully coherent with my academic research area. And the topic groups offered at Northwestern Polytechnical(School of Aeronautics), mainly, CFD and Software Lab are exactly the kind of the fields which are in phase with my research interest. During my Bachelor’s study I have obtained the right theoretical and experimental (Wind Tunnel etc.) knowledge, as well as the simulation techniques, now I just want to take all those ingredients into the right place with right people, so that something beautiful is produced in the end, and I believe the environment at Northwestern Polytechnical, offering the exact course outline and experimental facilities (Low and High Speed Wind tunnel), would help me satisfying my academic needs.

I have been doing research lately before choosing my university and I am satisfied to know that Northwestern Polytechnical University is what I am looking for. It holds a reputed name in engineering and has a good environment for international students. Belonging from a very mediocre family in Pakistan, and having sense of responsibility for my dedicated parents, I can't decide to go to universities in Beijing or any other expensive city/province where my parents can't afford my living. This place suits me and I think I will be able to pay there and after working hard I might get some scholarship, who knows? I personally think that this university can help me chase my dream and make me move few steps towards making me what I want to become. Lastly, I would like to add why I chose to leave my country and gain exposure in a foreign place: last two years had been quite rough for me in both emotional and financial matters. I had tough time concentrating fully on my studies to these sudden crisis yet I managed to survive. But what I have learned from these grievous circumstances was that life is a risky journey and no matter what you have to keep going- overcoming every obstacle in your way; no matter what you have to try and try and try until you succeed. Here in India, we have a festival called ‘Makar Sankranti’ whcih is celebrated to honour ‘the sun moving back to the tropic of cancer’. I love Makar Sankranti, not because I am a fan of astrological movements but because this festival incorporates kite flying. It is a very special time as people of all ages gather together to take part in various kite flying activities that occur during the festival. And it is this thrill of participating in those kite flying activities that drew me closer to kites. As a kid, I’d often spend long nights, building and designing the kites that I’d use in the kite flying competitions. I’d make beautiful designs, attach rudders and tails to my kites and would often come up with such innovative models which easily ensure my victory in most of those competitions. Little did I know then, that such avid indulgences in childhood would bloom into a passion for designing mechanical devices. After I entered high school, I got a chance to present a model at the annual science exhibition. Going with my interest, I along with my team ended up designing a model based on a novel idea of using Bernoulli’s theorem to generate electricity through tidal waves. While the model itself was well appreciated, it enabled me to understand Bernoulli’s theorem and the principles of flight in greater detail. Through high school I strengthened and mastered the educational faculties available to me. I taught myself computer programming and neuro-science. My endeavours in these fields saw me developing a unique ‘Java Editor’, winning the Montford Mathematics Olympiad and my research paper getting published in the coveted journal of THE ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA. It may seem as a marvellous episode but in reality, I’ve missed much. I missed to see the first fire being lit by man, couldn’t see wheel being invented. I wasn’t there to watch those emotions of anticipation & anxiety turning into those of thrill & accomplishment before & after Benjamin Franklin’s kite flying experiment. Sadly, when Graham Bell uttered the first words in his telephone, I wasn’t even conceived. That’s enough to send me into deep levels of depression. Hence I vowed never to miss any further game changing breakthrough. And it is in fulfillment of this vow that Northwestern Polytechnical University(NWPU) comes into play. At NWPU, I know I’ll never be missing the advent of another grand scientific innovation. And NWPU’s focus on undergrad education and research assures the plausibility of my participation in new inventions, especially in my area of interest- mechanical engineering. Hence what allures me most is the prospect of undergrad-centric teaching and focus on undergrad research; which coupled with close supervision and involvement by the faculty will make sure that the vaguest of my ideas can materialize. Along with honing academic skills, the liberty to commit mistakes is equally important, as none can impart as experience can. The first requirement I put in finding a Chinese university was a staff that can speak English clearly so that I could not be confused in my course of action. I read Northwestern have a staff that can speak English. This narrowed my choice. Secondly, I see one of North western’s Polytechnic institute requirements was strong capacity of scientific research. This led me to judge that how much the school give emphasize to academic research. Plus since the school is one of the members of the 211 and 985 projects, it is a great opportunity for me to be trained in a highly efficient way. Finally, with all the facilities Northwestern polytechnic is providing, the prices are extremely low. So I won’t be worrying about money in my entire study.
