To start off, my goal is to improve my Chinese. Although I studied Chinese at school a decade ago as a second language, I have not continued to maintain my standard of Chinese by reading and writing regularly and have forgotten a lot of vocabulary and proverbs. In addition, having lived in Hong Kong for a number of years, I fear that I am starting to use Cantonese terms and expressions when speaking mandarin or writing Chinese without knowing it. I therefore want to improve my Chinese and my understanding of Chinese history and culture through immersing myself in a Chinese (and Mandarin-speaking) environment. I choose Zhejiang University's language course because it is located in Hangzhou, one of my favourite Chinese cities. A lot of factors influenced my course selection. Personally, Agricultural Science was the only subject that I was very good at when I was in secondary school which then helped me to make easy career choices. I was then driven to pursue a diploma in Agricultural Science at the Guyana School of Agriculture where I thought that my skills had developed and I now see myself being ready to branch off from studying General Agriculture to focusing on an area in Animal Health or Animal Production/Science. While at the Guyana School of Agriculture I would work on the Livestock farm during semester breaks, where there were intense training and one on one with the farm veterinarian and the other livestock production specialists. Due to the farm being a mixed one what was most interesting to me was the hands-on experience gained from carrying out different animal husbandry practices on the different types of domesticated animals. This helped me to become versed and in the knowledge of each type of the different farm animals. I was fortunate to witness the farm veterinarian carrying out a Caudal Fold Tuberculin, (CFT) which is a screening test for tuberculosis. It was my first time viewing an activity of that nature and it inspired me to research animal pathology. I also found fascinating the feed computation method fascinating, where the feed was mixed on the farm with the best results in mind based on the age and purpose of the animals. The importance of proper sanitation methods to help to prevent and control the spread of diseases were also of vast interest to me. After the completion of my Diploma, I failed to gain employment in the Livestock Sector of my country but that did not hinder me from pursuing my goals. To broaden my knowledge I would do voluntary work on livestock farms in the area in which I live. And also attend seminars and training sessions held by the Guyana Livestock Authority. Books and articles in the areas of Veterinary Pathology and Animal Nutrition are also great sources of knowledge and insight for me because I believe that to get maximum production out of livestock we must determine the best possible mix of feed to give to them at each stage and to prevent any disease outbreak. I also am a part of a non-profit charitable organization by the name of R.E.A.C.H which main aim is to provide help to the less fortunate. REACH has helped me to develop my teamwork and leadership skills since I am the Event Coordinator for the organization. I also do voluntary teaching at the secondary school I previously attended since there is a shortage of Agricultural Science teachers at the institution. I am also a member of the Community Development group in the West Canje district in which I live. Apart from work and the other activities I am involved in I enjoy playing cricket and football and watching television series in my free time. I have gained some amount of experience in this field of study and I do know for a fact that it will not be easy but I believe that with hard work and dedication that all things are possible and that I will be given the opportunity to pursue my course of choice.

Here, I learned the basic job skills acquired by doctors in the beginning of their careers - like checking blood pressure, reading x-rays, conveying reports, giving an injection, suturing and performing an ECG. I was also required to counsel patients regarding their exercise and diet habits. I was in direct contact with the patients and nurses at all times which provided me with a vision of what a career in medicine would entail. Shadowing a doctor made me aware of the challenges associated with this career and how important non verbal communication and body language is during interaction with patients. I have also visited elderly homes and orphanages as a student in school. I was able to gain valuable experience by working with special needs children. While this was very challenging, I also found it an equally rewarding and enjoyable experience. It helped to broaden my understanding of working with people and also taught me the art of tact with children. It made me see my life in a complete different light. When I did a detailed study about the courses and curriculum offered at your university, I was highly impressed by the content. The vast range of amenities offered, the highly experienced and respected faculty, the caliber of the student body combined with the traditions and an amazing infrastructure attracted me to this university. The modules offering pre clinical and clinical years in the medical degree are exactly what I was looking for. I have been visiting China often to buy supplies for my business in the the Philippines. While here, I was able to travel to some beautiful places in the country. China is beautiful and the people are so nice and accommodating. However, I feel like I am unable to fully experience China because I cannot speak Chinese. Because of this, I told myself that I will learn the language in a formal setting so I can really immerse myself in my lessons.

I genuinely aspire to be a doctor so that I may have the honour, through my ability, to save patients in the future. Nurses are of paramount importance in the management of patients, but I desire to be a doctor because I want to be in the forefront of individualising and coordinating care for my patients. In addition, I sincerely hope to touch patients’ lives, by providing both physical and emotional healing. I believe a doctor’s career is an opportunity to contribute to the community directly, as I would be able to nurse the patients to health. This is the purpose and significance behind a medical career that appeals to me the most. One reason why I aspire to be a doctor is an experience that happened to my mother when I was twelve. She was pregnant with my twin brothers via In-vitro fertilisation, but during the fifth month of her pregnancy, she was forewarned that her caesarean section would be highly risky. Immediately after she gave birth, she had lost a lot of blood and nurses had to rush in with many bags of blood. Fortunately, the doctors and nurses managed to save her after she spent two days at the Intensive Care Unit. I was grateful beyond words that she was saved, and this truly inspired me to want to pursue medicine. To me, doctors are the epitome of extraordinary saviours, thus I desire to touch other people’s lives like how my mother’s doctors did. Due to my desire to become a doctor, I signed up for two job-shadowing programs; one of which was at Alexandra Hospital, and the other was at National University Hospital (NUH). At NUH, I was attached to the Department of Urology, and I had the privilege to witness live surgeries and shadow the doctors while they made their rounds. The experience was an eye-opening one, as it gave me a clearer perspective of my passion. Observing how the doctors care for their patients and interact with them made me even more certain that I was drawn to a medical career. These two programs have also prepared me to embrace challenges that I might face in the future as a prospective doctor. My desire to impact lives has led me to join the Heartware Volunteer Tutor Program in JC1, where I made weekly trips to Park View Primary School to tutor the children. It was heartening to watch them learn and grow throughout the year. Additionally, I was the captain of my school's badminton team. I nurtured my teammates under my care, while building strong bonds with them. I was also a member of the National Intermediate Squad from Secondary One to Secondary Four, and I had to train while coping with my academics simultaneously. It was not easy, but I persevered as I was determined to follow through with my passion since eight. With that same determination, I yearn to pursue a medical career, as it has always been my passion as well.

I would like to study in Zhejiang University firstly because it is located in Hangzhou. I really love chinese tea and my first contact with Hangzhou was because of Xihu Longjing tea. I went to China in 2015, and Hangzhou was the city I liked the most between the cities I have visited. There are many reasons that led me to choose this university: Fist of all, the great reputation of Zhejiang university. I know ZJU is member of the C9 League and when I used to live in China every Chinese I have met told me Zhejiang university is one of the most important universities in China. Secondly, I liked the approach this university takes to my course. Moreover facilities here for my course seem to be very professional. In this environment I can genuinely enjoy and feel motivated to study more and more. The reputation of the University makes me think teachers are competent and are able to share their knowledge in the best way. However, I can bring something to the university as well: I am good at organising things, and keen to get involved with running events for the department. I also like to give presentations, so I think I would be particularly useful when it comes to group work. I read my course has lots of activities of this kind, so here I am. My HSK level is not so high, it is just a little bit above the level the university requires (HSK IV, 226). Anyway, I consider myself good at understanding Chinese language, also due to the fact I have been awarded the best student in Chinese in my classroom when I was studying at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, one year and a half ago. I think this university can lead me to have a good career that fits with what I have studied, I am a future-oriented man and a quite ambitious one. When I was small, I attended a medical summer camp hosted by Taipei Medical University to learn about topics ranging from pharmacology to gross anatomy. We followed and observed doctors perform MRI scans, toured and learned about surgery rooms and surgical procedures, and witnessed the dissection of a mouse. This camp provided me with valuable knowledge and firsthand experience in medical procedures that doctors perform. My profound interest in biology made me delve deeper into molecular biology when I interned at National Taiwan University, School of Medicine, Graduate Institute of Molecular Medicine. During the internship, I studied neuronal development and dendrite pruning under Dr. Hsiu-Hsiang Lee, an assistant professor. Through our research, we identified a new protein that takes part in neuronal pruning. Through constant experimentation, we found that the Rab11 proteins take part extensively in dendrite pruning in C4DA neurons within Drosophila. In addition, part of my project was to analyze neurons under a confocal microscope to quantify their protein intensity. This was an invaluable experience for me because it was my first time seeing an actual living neuron. I can still remember the fascination of seeing the dendritic branching and axons and feeling inspired to pursue biology zealously. These inspirations are also often combined with remarkable experiences such as learning how to dissect Drosophila flies under microscopes or taking live imaging scans with a confocal microscope. These experiences have allowed me to develop the precision and patience needed to conduct scientific experiments. More importantly, I have learned to collaborate with my fellow laboratory researchers and PhD students, and develop strong bonds to form an effective team. My research paper on neuronal pruning has allowed me to win the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2017 Scholar award in the Regeneron (Intel) Science Talent Search Competition, which is a pre-university science competition, and I was one of the three fortunate winners in Asia. These invaluable lessons and skills that I have acquired will positively propel me forward to becoming an outstanding doctor. Therefore, as my love for biology and my curiosity for the human body constantly propels me to study medicine, I hope to attend Zhejiang University School of Medicine because not only does it possess abundant educational resources and facilities, but it also emphasizes the importance of having ethical and moral values as a doctor. I am applying to the master of computer application technology program because I believe my technical skills will blossom at your program as it is a place where I will be challenged and where I can develop my technical and scientific knowledge. I pursued my undergraduate studies in Computer Science at Gulu University located in Northern Uganda Early in my undergraduate study, I was introduced to basic programming languages of C, C++ and Java. I understood the key features of each language and realized that one was an improvement of the other. Java being the most powerful and robust language of all fascinated me the most. My first computer science project was “Core Banking”, which performs the operations of creating an account, assigning an account number and handling transactions involving deposits and withdraws. This program was initially written in C++ following the concepts of object oriented programming. Later I modified the same program with some improvements like adding a GUI interface using java I was later introduced to the subject of computer Networks. Already having a sound knowledge of practical computer networking, I was at ease with this subject. During this course, I learnt the software side of networking i.e. how to actually implement and develop different servers. The sessions in the labs were devoted in developing programs like implementation of connection-oriented and connectionless Echo servers, concurrent multi-threaded file transfer server and chat server. I remember the day as if it were yesterday. During my second year in the University, I was attempting to transmit a group of characters comprising my name from one computer to another. I connected the computers using RS-232 cable, wrote the necessary programs and executed them. I typed my name on one terminal and rushed to the other to see the results “wow, this is magic!” I exclaimed as I read ‘simon on the screen’. While I realized intuitively that a complex version of this elementary network could achieve much, at the time, I had no real idea ,what now, two years later I know that networking makes possible a plethora of applications, from video conferencing over the internet to linking banks through private networks. It still seems like magic, or rather a grand adventure one that most certainly want to be part of. Apart from the projects undertaken in the University, it was my desire to gain exposure to the software industry and this prompted me to take up various trainings and internships. After successful completion of my year one, I attended a Recess term where we had training on computer repair and maintenance conducted by the University. I also went for industrial training after my second year to Seroma Christian high school where I was always involved in the networking activities. For my final University project, I worked with a team of three other course mates to develop a “Mobile Route Guide App”. The application was intended to guide users on the shortest route to their destination form their current location. This assignment greatly strengthened my conceptual knowledge, and through its practical implementation, it also allowed me to further my expertise. Simultaneously, active participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities has ensured the all-round development of my personality. I have taken part in cultural activities like group dance of BANKOSA (Baganda Nkobazambogo Students Association).A part from this, I handled the role of being the student representative of the faculty of science for the academic year 2014-2015 to the guild, a responsibility that included acting as the bridge between the students and the administration, Scheduling additional lectures for the class, assisting the faculty advisor in her duties and assisting the students I case of any problem. This experience brought to the fore my leadership abilities, while also assisting in honing my social skills. Having acquired a solid foundation in the field of computer science through a rigorous undergraduate program, and my various internships in the IT industry, at this point, I feel that it is the right time to take up graduate studies. In my search for exceptionality in my chosen field, I know that I have to study at a reputable institution. After having done some research on the internet, knowing I wanted to study in China, I realised that Zhejiang University was the best option. First of all, Zhejiang university is located in the beautiful city of Hangzhou. The amazing West Lake is just around the corner, all the facilities you need are at walking distance, Hangzhou's city center is easily accessible by public transport, and its night life very promising. Another important reason that contributed to my decision of choosing this university is the language program, which I chose. The program's duration is one year and it offers small class teachings and an appropriate level of Chinese that will be taught, in order to make the lessons nor too easy nor too difficult. Although Hangzhou is an immense city, it is not as known as Shanghai or Beijing, which means the people of Hangzhou are less 'adapted' to foreigners and you will learn Chinese very fast because you will pushed to speak Chinese more often. I want to improve my Chinese because China is becoming one of the most important countries and economies of the world. My reasons to choose the Zhejiang University for my Semester Chinese Language Program are the following. The Zhejiang University is ranked as one of China’s best university’s. The campuses are all beautifully located with old buildings and in a natural environment. My current Chinese teacher also strongly advised me to go to the Zhejiang University. The way the Chinese Language Program is offered is another reason for me to choose the Zhejiang University. The classes are small, containing 15-20 students so you can ask questions and get personal attention from the professors. Students are placed in classes that suit them best by taking a test in this way you will learn the Chinese language better and faster. There are also elective courses offered such as Chinese Economy and History of China. I think it is very interesting to not only learn Mandarin but also to understand more about the Chinese culture. The Zhejiang University is located in the city Hangzhou, which is a very lively and one of the most renowned cities in China. The city centre is lively with shops, temples, cafes and nightlife. And there are also beautiful natural scenes such as the famous West Lake.

My passion to do medicine started when I began learning biology in school. From general biology to biological systems each class seemed to get more interesting with new discoveries. This made me appreciate the human body more as I learned about the way that we are made to function and just how accurately all the systems in our body work together to keep us breathing. I found it incredibly fascinating that a two-stranded molecule called DNA contained all the biological instructions half from my mother, half from my father to make me as unique as I am. For me learning about the way this molecule is put together so precisely to be able to encode an organism’s phenotype was extremely intriguing and biology then became my favorite subject and I knew I wanted to be a doctor. This love for biology is what led me to do a week of work experience in Anandaban Hospital here in Nepal shadowing doctors trying to learn about the profession I wanted to be a part of so desperately in my future. Furthermore it was still this fascination with biology that led me to start tutoring year 12 students at my high school with A-level biology. In the first year, the list of courses is impressive; the comprehensive and wide ranging list of modules will allow me to combine career ambition and personal interest, as well as offering the prospect of developing new interests. It is, however, the second year of this course which I feel sets it apart from competitors such as Peking and Tsinghua.
