I attended BLCU for a 12 week language study program during university and learned basic chinese quicker than I ever had through self-study or other means, as well as having a lot of fun. When I was a child, I always heard my school teachers and relatives repeat this Arabic saying which is more than a1000 years old. So, after I graduated from Damascus University in 2013 with a degree in English translation, I revived my old dreams of studying Chinese in China itself. Despite the heavy and devastating war that was taking place in Syria, I used my personal savings to travel to China in 2014 for one year where I studied at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Living in China was such a relieving experience for me. I was able to learn more about Chinese language, culture, and traditions. I scored 185 in HSK Level 4 examination. After completing one year of study and having used up my savings, I went back to Syria in 2015. In 2016, and after getting married and joining my husband who lives and works in a business TV channel (CNBC Arabia TV) in Dubai, UAE, I continued taking Chinese courses at Confucius Institute at University of Dubai. I also met many Chinese people who live and work in Dubai, or visit the city for tourism or fun. My passion for Chinese will never end here. In fact, that is why I would like to continue learning Chinese in China at the Beijing Language and Culture University. I have always wanted to travel to China to learn not only the language but also learn about the culture. I have studied Mandarin at high school for 5 years now and started researching possible universities I could apply to for a gap year in 2017. Beijing Language and Culture University has been recommended to me a numerous amount of times due to their excellent teaching ways and hospitality. Whilst learning Mandarin, I am also very eager to meet lots of new people and I think going to a university such as BLCU would be of great benefit because of the number of foreign students at the university.

As the year went on I slowly realized how unprepared I was for what the class demanded. I paid the price for it. I received a D for the year. I was undoubtedly the worst speaker in class. Furthermore, my teacher gave me a choice to either take another class or to retake Mandarin 1 because I just wasn’t ready for Mandarin 2. I made the decision that would ultimately lead me to my destiny. The following year was much easier for me, however I was still lacking the drive needed to really make the difference. Eventually when I finally took Mandarin 2 it became apparent to me how important China was to me. I decided that I would study outside of class, do the homework, and even pay attention in class. I became obsessed with China. So much so that I would speak the language all the time and learn as much as I could about its history. I was fascinated by the art, music, food, history, and philosophy. I still failed from time to time, but I never gave up. In the summer of 2015, I traveled to China and was surrounded by the language that I studied so painstakingly. I was on the Great Wall of China, I got to see where the first emperor was buried, and I even got see the Temple of Heaven. I had the opportunity to demonstrate my skill and many were impressed by my progress. So much so that people told me I was on the road to becoming fluent. When I returned to America I was more motivated than ever to pursue the language. I started taking Kung-Fu classes and began looking into schools in which I could master the language. Looking back at it now even though I failed my first year of Mandarin, I never gave up. Investing into hard work sharpened my Mandarin and by Mandarin 3 I was the best speaker in class. In my case Kong Tzu was correct when he said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Choosing to continue my study of Mandarin sent me on a literal journey to China, and set a path for my future.

At BLCU I believe that I will obtain a rounded education with the most qualified staff. I worked in China for five years (2009 to 2014) and in that time studied Chinese in my spare time using some BLCU books: the 汉语阅读速成 series, the 汉语口语速成 series, the 汉语听力速成 series and 习惯用语教程, all of which were very useful and all of which I have continued to use now that I work in France. I also have some friends who have studied at BLCU and they have told me a lot of positive things about it, especially the teachers and the campus. Dear Sir or Madam, being born and raised in Germany as a child with asian background, I naturally was interested in asian culture ever since. At first primarily Vietnam, given that this is the country my parents originated from. But later, as I grew up, I developed more and more interest in East Asia as a whole and ultimately in China through music and art, in which I am passionate about. At age 14 I started listening to chinese music and at 16 I watched chinese dramas regularly. It became only logical, for me to study in this particular field after graduating from high school. This is why I started in 2012 studying "Moderne Ostasienstudien" (Modern East Asian Studies) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The attention of my academic studies belongs to China and its society, politics and economy. Three years later I want to finally meet the country I researched, studied and loved for so long. I want to extend my knowledge about its characteristics and its people, as well as deepen my Chinese. After spending months of researching every bigger city in China, I eventually fell in love with Beijing and its beautiful scenery. The attractive capital is the perfect combination of an ancient and modern city. Furthermore, Chinas economy is leading in the world. Through internships in german companies I have got in touch with chinese component suppliers. In order to learn more about all the steps it takes to produce a commodity and to be able to actually order and fabricate a product myself in China, it is crucial to learn and speak Chinese. There is no better way in learning the language then in the country itself and in the city, where standard Chinese is spoken. Out of all the universities Beijing has to offer, I liked the "Beijing Language and Culture University" the most. I have already studied one semester at BLCU. BLCU is clearly the best university in term of learning Chinese language. I studied very well there and get high marks at the exams. I would like to come back for one year of Chinese Preparatory Courses, then study for a degree in China.
