Program Highlights
- Sustainable Building and Environmental Research Institute (SBERI) is an internationally joint research organization based in NPU . It mainly cooperates with teaching & research experts and organizations from Sweden, Japan, Australia and the U.S.

- The Dean of the School, Professor Zhufeng Yue , is a chair professor of the Cheung Kong Scholars Program and a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Science Foundation.

2. Program Overview
The program aims to prepare the students who are dedicated to play the leading role in civil engineering. To this end, we provide a series of professional training during four years' study. After graduation, students will achieve the competitive abilities of architectural design, structure analysis, project management, construction site guidance, etc..
3. Program Advantages
The discipline of civil engineering was established in 1985, which is one of the key disciplines at NPU. The program of civil engineering is listed as the characteristic specialty in Shaanxi Province, China. The discipline is staffed by faculty members with high qualifications and diverse academic backgrounds. In recent years, more and more young Ph.D. holders from famous overseas universities join us. Currently, there are 40 staff members, including 1 professor selected by “National 1000 Young Talents Program”, 7 professors, 13 associate professors and senior engineers and 20 Master-degree advisers. Among the teaching staff, over 50% are young teachers under the age of 40.
4. Reasons to Study Civil Engineering program at NPU
NPU is one of the national "985 Project" and "211 Project" key universities. It is famous for “Sanhang” disciplines (i.e., aeronautics, astronautics, marine science and technology). The discipline of civil engineering at NPU not only adapts to the needs of economic development, advances with the development of state-of-the-art civil engineering knowledge, but also focus on the inter-discipline collaboration, e.g., solving the core problems in the areas of complex environment and advanced technology.
5. Core Courses
Students need to gain at least 143 credits in four years to obtain the Bachelor degree of Engineering. The courses are divided into compulsory courses (e.g., Calculus, Linear Algebra, College Physics, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Mechanical Mapping, P.E., Theoretical mechanics, Mechanics of Material, Structure Mechanics, Building Materials, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Design of Concrete Structure and Masonry Structure, Design of Steel Structure, Basic components and Principles of Concrete) and optional courses (e.g. Chinese Language, Chinese Civilization, Frontier of Civil Engineering, General Introduction to Civil Engineering, Computer Programming, Computer aided design, Green Building and Estimation, Chinese Traditional Building Design, Introduction to Intelligent Transportation System).
6. Main Experiments
We provide comprehensive practices to improve students’ hands-on ability. For example, Practice of Metal Processing Technology, College Computer Experiment, Programming Experiment, Physical Experiment, Engineering Mechanics Experiment, Construction Building Material Test, Geotechnical Laboratory Test, and Structure Experiment.
7. Main Practices
Before learning the major related courses (at the end of the second year), students have chances to visit construction sites and communicate with engineers in form of Cognition Practice and Production Practice. These valuable experience will help them establish intuition concepts efficiently.
8. Internship Opportunities
We provide extensive guidance, support, as well as the opportunity for internships. The department has established firm cooperation with several construction enterprises (e.g., China State Construction, Shannxi Construction Engineering Group Cooperation Limited, Xi’an Construction Engineering, DAFANG Group) and construction design institutes (e.g. China Northwest Architecture Design and Research Institute CO. LTD, Northwest Engineering Cooperation Limited,
Northwest Research Institute of Engineering Investigation and Design). Moreover, the laboratories in NPU and our department also provide internships and part-time jobs.
9. Career Possibilities
After finishing studies, students can have multiple options for their careers. They can find industrial jobs after the Bachelor graduation. The employment rate of civil engineering was 100% in the past three years. Finding a job for a civil engineer is never a problem in China.
Alternatively, they can choose to further study in NPU. We have two research centers and more than six research groups, which provide several research directions, e.g., mechanical properties of structures and materials under complex loading, structural health monitoring and reliability assessment, modern airport and road design, seismic resistance and design, long-span spatial structure design. Chinese government and NPU also offer scholarships to outstanding students who have strong motivation to participate scientific researches.
10. International Feedback
Among the first batch of graduates in 2014 (Fig.1), two of them join the Chinese construction companies, and now they were sent by the company to their own country for the construction business. Two of them continue their master in other foreign countries for project management. Asa Felix, (Fig. 2), a graduate of 2014, founded his own business in Xi’an, China.

Q: If I failed to get the scholarship, is the money refundable?
A: No, because the application process for this scholarship is complicated and hard to deal with. We need a very long time to help you apply it. As a result, it is not refundable.
Q: When can I know the result whether I get the scholarship or not?
A: Generally, the result will come out around mid-February for Spring Intake and around May to June for Autumn Intake.
Q: When will I get the admission documents?
A: The admission documents, including Admission Letter, Scholarship Confirmation and Visa Letter, will be delivered to you 1-2 months before the course starts.
Q: Why should I pay the service fee in advance?
A: Scholarship application takes time, effort and resource in both CUCAS and universities, and the process is irreversible. In case of casual applications and attempts, we charge service fee in advance. There is no extra cost or hidden charge.
