The master program of Modern Chinese Studies is a two-year program suitable for graduate students who have developed an interest in China and now want to take that to a higher level. Designed to provide a comprehensive overview of modern Chinese society and culture, it involves intensive academic training in three specific sub-directions, including Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy. The program contains public courses as the indispensable component of the educational system at SJTU, fundamental courses as the elementary unit of program education, and frontier and optional courses as the core units to deepen the student’s knowledge in his/her chosen field. In addition, optional courses are also available for all the admitted students in the program to broaden their interdisciplinary knowledge. Students in this program are encouraged to develop or extend their knowledge and understanding of the key approaches and methodologies to the humanities study of modern China, as well as their ability for interdisciplinary research. Faculty members will be always available to advise and guide students through their course study and thesis writing.
This is a two-year program, during which the students usually finish their course study in the first academic year and focus on thesis writing in the second academic year.
The enrolled students should complete at least 30 credits to meet the prerequisites of graduation, including 6 credits for public courses and 12 credits for fundamental courses. There are in total 14 GPA credits.
The enrolled students must complete their credits and assignments as required by the School of Humanities within the appointed period of time, finishing all the courses with a passing score. Once the student, with good academic integrity, has passed the thesis evaluation and oral defense, he/she could be awarded the Graduate Certificate and the Master Degree. Based on the student’s choice of sub-direction, he/she shall receive the Master’s Degree in Chinese Language and Literature or Chinese History or Chinese Philosophy.
