Program Description

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

As a student of this programme, you will have access to almost all of the modules offered in the Department of English, Culture and Communication, across our specialist areas of English language and literature, and communication and media.

The unique level of choice and flexibility makes this programme ideal for international students. Like our other English programmes, it has modules on translation and interpreting between English and Chinese, as well as a unique specialised module on literary translation. The programme’s flexible structure, however, means that these modules are not compulsory, allowing both international and domestic students to follow alternative routes.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Communications and the media play an increasingly central role in modern society, economics and politics, making English, the global communications language, more important than ever before. You will gain an understanding of the changing use of language and other forms of communication, and the ways in which they inform and influence contemporary society.

By the time you graduate, you will be able to:

  • communicate professionally in English, within the context of journalism and the media
  • understanding the theories and analytical techniques associated with linguistics, literature, culture and communication
  • apply your knowledge and skills to solve practical challenges and problems within the context of journalism and the media.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY COMMUNICATION STUDIES AT XJTLU?

  • Access to the full range of modules taught in the department
  • More options than any other degree programme - during Years Two to Four, you can choose 18 modules from a choice of over 40
  • In Years Three and Four, all subject modules are optional, giving you complete control over your programme of study

CAREER PROSPECTS

Students will graduate with a combination of critical and theoretical knowledge in combination with strong English language skills, and will be attractive employees in an increasingly globalised workplace.

You will acquire intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills that are highly valued by employers. Graduates may be employed in journalism, broadcasting or advertising. Some may be employed as management trainees in a variety of businesses, while others will start their careers in retailing, computing, and librarianship. You may also be able to pursue a career as a professional translator or interpreter, or as a teacher of English as a foreign language. Additionally, the programme provides a foundation for further graduate level study in the subjects of English language, English literature and communications.
