Program Description

OVERVIEW

The BEng Computer Science and Technology programme combines the core elements of electrical and electronic engineering with those of computer science, to equip graduates with detailed knowledge of the design and development of both hardware and software.

WHY SHOULD I STUDY COMPUTER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT XJTLU?

The programme combines the core elements of electrical and electronic engineering with those of computer science. Teaching is divided equally between the Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Computer Science at XJTLU. Academic staff teaching on the programme have actively collaborated with leading international partners such as Texas Instruments (USA), Synopsys (Ireland/USA), LG (Korea), and IBM (China).

Many graduates pursue postgraduate studies at world-renowned universities or start their career with prestigious employers because of these experiences. You will engage in research and industry-related work and, under the supervision of staff, you will have opportunities to present your research results at international conferences and to publish in leading journals.

Each year, a considerable number of students are awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship that allows them to conduct supervised research with financial support. Student placement opportunities provide a platform for your career development and allow you to gain practical experience to complement theoretical studies.

Graduates of this programme, as with all XJTLU undergraduate programmes, will earn two degrees: an XJTLU degree from the Chinese Ministry of Education and a globally recognised degree from the University of Liverpool, a member of the Russell Group of leading UK universities.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

By the time you graduate from BEng Computer Science and Technology, you will:

  • understand the fundamentals of computer science and electrical and electronic engineering
  • develop relevant knowledge and technical skills in mathematics, hardware engineering, software engineering, design and management
  • be able to apply and combine knowledge, skills and understanding effectively to investigate and resolve complex problems in research and industrial environments

Final year project
Alongside the project, you will further develop your knowledge of analogue and digital communications, big data analytics, embedded computer systems and software engineering.

CAREERS

Typically, BEng Computer Science and Technology graduates are employed in the semiconductor industries, electronic design and automation enterprises, electronic and computer equipment manufacturers, project consultancies, universities and research institutions.

The quantitative and other transferable skills you will acquire during your studies mean that you could also pursue a career in a non-technical profession such as banking, accountancy, management or law. The programme also provides a foundation for further postgraduate study in electrical and electronic engineering and computer science.
