Program Description

1. Cultivation Aims

This program includes three majors: ancient Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese philology, theory and criticism of literature and arts.

The research directions are: 1. history of development of the literature from pre-Qin to Ming and Qing dynasties. 2.developomeng of Chinese literature of 20th century. 3.modern Chinese dialectology and grammar. 4.literary criticism and methodology of 20th century, contemporary literature and the development of culture.

This program aims to cultivate qualified students who are well developed to lay a solid theoretical foundation in the Chinese language, literature and culture, acquire systematic specified knowledge and fairly good practical ability. They are also required to be able to undertake teaching, literature research and other social work.

5. Research and Thesis

5.1 After acquiring all the credits as required, candidates are eligible for conducting research on their theses.

5.2 Candidates begin the research work under guidance of their supervisors, conduct seminars on documentary resources, thesis preliminary conference and periodical reports on their theses during the second year. After consulting the discipline panel and obtaining the approval of the panel, candidates can start their specific studies and thesis writing. There must be 3 professors and associated professors attending the thesis preliminary conference.

5.3 Candidates must take part in the professor's research item. The thesis must be printed out and then submitted to the defense committee, which will make arrangement for the evaluation and defense of the theses.

5.4 The thesis writing should be conducted in accordance with "The Quantification Index on Research Achievements of Shanghai University for Master's and Doctoral Candidates."

5.5 The completed theses should be assessed and degrees conferred in accordance with "Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees in the People's Republic of China" and "Rules Concerning Academic Degrees in Shanghai University."

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with a valid ordinary-type passport, and in good health;

If you are applying for Chinese-taught programs, HSK certificates within two years are required (HSK refers to Chinese Proficiency Test. You can find information on: www.chinesetest.cn):

HSK 5 above 180 for Science or Engineering, Economics or Management and Art;

HSK 5 above 210 for Humanities.

HSK Exemptions

The following types of applicants are exempt from taking the HSK:

Native speaker of Chinese;

The previous degree is fully taught in Chinese.

Be a bachelor's degree holder;

Graduates who did not receive their degree certificates at the time of application should provide pre-graduation certificates issued by their schools or colleges to prove their ability to graduate smoothly and obtain their degree certificates by July 2022.

Relevant undergraduate academic background is required, or have completed undergraduate-level courses relevant to intended graduate major, with GPA 2.5 or above(Note: 4-Point GPA System);

Accepted by a prospective professor at Shanghai University

Choose supervisor online when choosing a major in the online application system and get accepted by a prospective professor.

Please note that it is not required to choose supervisor for the following Master's programs: School of Economics, MBA center and SILC Business School. The colleges will arrange soon after they register at Shanghai University.

Students applying to programs of arts must have relative academic background and submit a portfolio. Please refer to detailed application requirements under the program introduction on application website.

Some colleges give priority to applicants with work experience, such as MBA Center.

A clear copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue, date of expiry; Visa page is required for applicants who are currently in China. Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home country.

*3. Academic Transcripts of Bachelor Degree

Academic Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization. Both original and official English translated version are required.
For applicants who haven’t graduated, pending graduation certificate and transcripts available till the application date are also acceptable. Official graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades shall be submitted timely after being received.

Certificate of your family financial situation background. You need to go to the bank to issue a deposit of your family financial situation.

Please note that it is not required to choose supervisor for following Master programs: School of Economics, MBA center and SILC Business School. The colleges will arrange soon after they register at Shanghai University.

For any applicants who can not get the Certificate of No Criminal Record at home country, please sign the No criminal record Commitment with Shanghai University.

*7. Selfie video

Applicants should submit a video including self-introduction and study plan in China. avi, mov, or mp4 less than 50 MB are accepted. The language of the video should be consistent with the language of the program you are applying for (English or Chinese).

*8. ID photo

The passport-size photo (one-inch, 390*570) should be taken within the last six months, bareheaded, full-faced with blue-color background; the photo is required to submit as JPG image less than 100kb.

*9. Highest Degree Certificate

Certificate in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization. Both original and official English translated version are required.
For applicants who haven’t graduated, pending graduation certificate and transcripts available till the application date are also acceptable. Official graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades shall be submitted timely after being received.

*10. Two Letters of Recommendation with Signature

Written in English or Chinese by two different professors or associate professors or experts from related fields.
The referee’s signature and contact information are necessary.And the date of recommendation letter should not be earlier than September,2022.

*11. Research Plan(including study plan and research proposal in China)

Written in English or Chinese (according to the teaching language of the program), more than 800 words, including research achievements so far (e.g. title and abstracts of graduation thesis or published paper), reasons of choosing SHU, study and research plan, future career plan, etc.

Applicants for art majors should provide at least two examples of artworks; Applicants of music and film academy programs should provide audios and videos related to the major.
