General Introduction

SUTCM plays an increasingly active role in the stage of international exchange. Smooth cooperative relationships have been established with more than 20 countries like Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea in terms of education and scientific research. Zhen Dong Austrilia-China Molecular Chinese Medicine Research Center was jointly established by SUTCM, Zhen Dong Group and the University of Adelaide-in. It is the first Chinese medicine research center focusing on education, research and production based in a prestigious western comprehensive institute. Since its foundation, six teachers have been visiting scholars there. Nine post-graduate students have finished their study there. Six articles have been accepted and published and was collected by SCI. Two state-level and four province-level collaborative projects have been undertaken.

In terms of formal education, since the year 2002, SUTCM has enrolled and graduated a thousand international students from the Unite States,Korea, Romania, Iceland, Cameroon, Mexico, Pakistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

In terms of short-term training, entrusted by Ministry of Commerce and Health and Family Planning Commission of Shanxi Province, SUTCM has hosted the Training Course on Acupuncture and Moxibustion for a succession of 18 years from 1998. Thousands of medical workers from developing countries have reaped the benefit. They have, thereby, come to befriend Chinese, know about China, and fall in love with China, and SUTCM has gained even higher reputation as an influential institute for that matter.

Organization and Staff

The International Education Center of SUTCM is in charge of foreign students education. There are teaching and research offices, management office, reference room and language labs with 22 staff who have received special training on the work concerned. These training include professional training as well as training about laws and regulations, etiquette, working skills, etc.

Teaching

Teachers responsible for Chinese are sent to professional institutes to get special training.

Teachers responsible for specialized courses undergo a strict selection process so that excellent ones can be assigned the task. They, are trained in English speaking and listening so that smooth and successful teaching can be achieved.

Foreign teachers are engaged.

Motivation mechanism is introduced to stimulate teachers to do a better job, including higher pay, teaching contest and so on and so forth. Teachers are also encouraged to undertake research projects in relevant field.

International students are offered ways to voice their opinions and advice on the arrangement of courses or teaching approaches.

All these policies guarantee that these students are treated in the same way that Chinese students are treated. The ultimate goal is that foreign students get the best medical knowledge, clinical skills and professional training during their stay here and in future serve humanity.

Internship Bases

SUTCM boasts 63 training and internship bases, among which there are three directly affiliated hospitals with more than 2,700 beds for patients. The Second Hospital gets handsome support from the national government as the main internship and training base for undergraduate students. The Third Hospital is the supreme institute in Shanxi which features instruction, clinics and research in acupuncture and moxibustion. It is widely known for its “non-herbal”therapy and the New Nine Needles. The Hospital of integrated TCM and WM, established in 1939, is characterized by its advanced medical equipment and a top class nursing team.

Instructors in these hospitals have been trained at home and abroad to enhance their language competency so that they can be qualified. International students, just like native students, have to undergo intense training and abide by strict rules to ensure smooth internship.

Activities

A wide range of activities are arranged in campus, such as Christmas eve party, Chinese New Year party, Mid-autumn Day party, singing contest, sports gala etc.. Students have great opportunity to compete in diverse contests held in Shanxi and trips are also arranged to visit   historical places like Shanxi Museum. Through all these activities, students gain a better understanding of Shanxi and China, promote mutual understanding, respect and trust and ultimately help build harmonious atmosphere which is beneficial for their life in China.
