Program Description

Cheng de (not Chengdu!) was the Qing Emperors’ summer residence and the place where standard Mandarin Chinese was codified in 1952. The city is located about two hour north-east of Beijing. Here people speak most “standard” Mandarin in all of china, but not a work in English. . The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in the mountains with plenty of fresh air and has no expat community. Here you will speak Mandarin only all day and be completely immersed into a Chinese language and culture environment.
Students study the first half of the program in Beijing and the second in Chengde. This is for students who are looking for the quickest language progress possible. It also offers the great experience of living in a big metropolitan city as well as a smaller more traditional town like Chengde. The total immersion environment in Chengde is especially helpful in helping students’ language skills to progress very quickly.
