This first-level discipline contains two second-class disciplines "Communication and Information System" and "Signal and Information Processing". The Discipline is a key discipline of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and key discipline of Chongqing during its "Tenth Five-Year Plan", "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" and "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". It is the discipline that set up posts for the first batch of Ba-Yu Scholars and Par-Eu/Liang-Jiang Scholars in Chongqing Municipality and pillar discipline of Chongqing Post-Doctoral Research Station.

The Discipline is the first one in the country to carry out researches on TD-SCDMA Third Generation ( 3G ) Mobile Communication Standard, WDM and Full Service Unified Transmission Network, Optical Internet Architecture etc. Over the recent five years, it has undertaken 68 projects funded by National 973 Program, 863 Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Major National Science and Technology Projects, and 116 provincial and ministerial research projects, with expenditures reaching about 143 million yuan for various scientific research projects. The research level ranks forefront among the research fields of communications domestically . The Discipline has 16 people(person-time) serving as committee members in the China Institute of Electronics, China Communications Society, IEEE Access, Journal of Communications, Journal of Electronics and Information, Journal of Electronics (China) and other societies or periodicals. Has published 456 important periodical articles retrieved by SCI/EI in domestic and foreign authoritative academic journals such as IEEE WELEL COMMUN, IEEE COMMUN MAG, IEEE NETWORK, IEEE T WIREL COMMUN, IEEE T COMMUN, Journal of Electronics, Journal of Communications, China Journal Of Computer Science etc; participated important conferences such as在AAAI,IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE ICC and IEEE VTC for 40 times, granted with 172 invention patents, and transferred 56 national patents for inventions, obtained 51 computer software copyright registrations and published 20 books (compilation and translation). The Discipline in the broadband communications network, mobile communications, optical communications and optical networks, communications signal processing, multimedia information processing and other aspects has formation of stable research directions. The research results that include "TD-SCDMA Mobile Communication Standard" and "Key Technologies and Applications of Communication Network Testing and Optimization Platform" won the second prizes of National Prize For  Progress in Science and Technology of China, and "Key Technologies and Applications of TD-SCDMA Mobile-Phone Core Chip Platform" won second prize of National Prize For Technological Invention of China, while "Research and Application of Key Technologies for Mobile Complex Networks Facing Heterogeneous Services" and "Research and Application of Key Technologies for High-survivability Optical Networks" won the First Prizes in Chongqing Municipality Prizes For progress In Science and Technology; "Key Technology of TD-LTE-Advanced Wireless Interface Standardization" and "Transmission Control Technology of Broadband Wireless Mobile-Access Network" won the first prizes of Chongqing Prize For Technology Invention. Developed the world's first 0.13-micron TD-SCDMA mobile-phone baseband chip, which won the  Laurel of Ten Major University Scientific and Technological Progresses by Ministry of Education.
