The Port of Dandong is located on the right bank at the mouth of the Yalu River. It is bordered by the Yellow Sea in the south and is separated from the North Korea in the east. It was set up as a trading port in 1907. Since large-scale construction began in the mid-1980s, the Port, together with the ports at Dalian and Yingkou, has become an important distributing centre in northeast China.
Duanqiao Bridge over Yalu River is made of iron. It is 944 meters long and 11 meters wide. The bridge can move by 90℃ with the forth hole in the middle as the axis, and is thus very convenient for transportation. In April, 1943, the Japanese invaders who colonized Northeast China and North Korea constructed the second bridge no less than 100 meters off the Duanqiao Bridge. During the war against American invaders, two bridges over Yalu River became the main transportation artery for supporting Koreans. Therefore the Americans tried to bomb the bridges for many times. The first bridge was finally destroyed in November, 1950, and only its middle part is retained as today’s Duanqiao which means a broken bridge in Chinese.
Yalu River Park is characterized by exuberant trees, amorous flowers, elegant pavilions and terraces, long and winding mazes, as well as vivid artificial mountains and corridors, etc. There are Peony Garden, Hibiscus Garden, China Rose Garden and so on. Each year in the blooming season the gardens will receive numerous bees and butterflies. Moreover, the park is equipped with new and complete recreation facilities. Yachting on the clear Yalu River, tourists can enjoy their heart content the fantastic fairyland-like scenery which makes them even reluctant to leave.
