Dali Airport is located on the southeast bank of Erhai Lake, about 13 kilometers (8 miles) away from the city center. At present, flights using this airport connect the city with many destinations such as Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, Xishuangbanna, Tianjin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guiyang and Guangzhou. Many flights, such as to Guangzhou and Kunming, are operated daily.

Without a clear distinction between the four seasons, Dali's weather fluctuates each season but with an annual mean temperature ranging from 12 °C (54 °F) to 19 °C (66 °F). Its rainy season begins in June and lasts till October. The hottest days are in July with an average temperature of 22 °C (72 °F), while the coldest are in January is at around of 8 °C (46 °F).  There are local songs claiming that 'the scenery of Dali in March is good', so spring is, of course, the best season to visit Dali Old Town, climb Mt. Cangshan or tour Erhai Lake.

Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake are praised as the city's leading scenic areas. Most attractions lie between these two landmarks, such as the Butterfly Spring, and the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple. Ethnic minorities have inhabited in this area for generations, with the Bai Minority making up the majority of its population (65%). The customs of the ethnic minorities bring charm to daily life. Each spring, celebrations and festivals bring the city to life. Celebrations such as the March Street Festival and Butterfly Fest provide excellent opportunities to learn about local folk customs.
